Assuming We Survive - Sweet pop punk band. Bouncy music, good vibes.
Chunk, No! Captain Chunk - Hate all you want, they were fun. They're like the French version of A Day To Remember.
Covet - Badass. Reminds me of Scale The Summit. The lead chick could shred like a machine.
I See Stars - Another fun band that I used to listen to more often. Again, fun, but the sound was a bit muffled. Was surprised how popular they still are.
The Contortionist - Probably my favorite band of the day, and the cleanest sounding band I heard. The new(?) vocalist is outstanding. The dude's stage presence was eerie and entertaining, and the band couldn't have sounded better.
Born Of Osiris - Heaviest band of the day. It had been forever since I last saw them. They sounded good, nice heavy riffs and shit. Crowd bounced around like wild. Typical show from these guys, but solid.
Silverstein - Played the hits, plus a couple new ones. Crowd loved them. Vocalist sounded good, band was entertaining to watch.
The Devil Wears Prada - Heavy stuff, nothing I haven't seen before, but it's still fun to watch. I still don't fucking get how all these bands are still so damn popular.
Saosin - Never listen to them before. They were pretty cool I guess, standard post-hardcore sound. Anthony Green was entertaining though, funny guy with a really good voice. Caught a pick too, score.
Underoath - Another band I've never listed to before. Fuck they were popular. I enjoyed them though. The band had a ton of energy, and the sound was spot-on. Watched them for about 45min and then I headed out.
Overall not a bad day. Nice to see some bands I haven't listened to in awhile, as well as a couple I never got around to listening to in the first place. The crowd was ass, but that was to be expected. Might do this again next year, we'll see.
So my friend and I left RIC around 2pm to head up for the show. Despite the fact that I used to live in Boston I was still an idiot and let the GPS take is to the Mass Pike so we got fucked over by a couple of tolls on the way there. We get to the venue, and parking is a bitch because there's a Red Sox game going on. But we get it done, and we head to my favorite place to go to for food near the House of Blues, which is Tasty Burger. I walk in and sitting at a table right by the entrance is none other than Dave Lombardo with some ST crew guys. I tell my friend as we get seated, and I try to figure out how to talk to him. Eventually I go take a piss and on my way back decide to just go for it and do the usual "big fan blah blah not trying to bother but pic pls" and he's really chill about it and lets us take the pic. My idiot friend doesn't realize Dave left Slayer so he of course makes the convo awkward when he says he just saw them but Dave was just like "where have you been dude I left 2 years ago". He then pitched us his new hardcore band Death Cross and then food arrived so we all went back to our respective tables.
After the food we went to the line which only had one person in it at that point, even though it was 2 hours before doors. Still wasn't able to get rail because VIP got first dibs and I didn't care much to squeeze my way up there.
The first band, Havok, was damn entertaining thrash worship. Didn't like them as much as Waste, but they put on an energetic and fun live show. Their drummer especially had some serious chops. They were actually the loudest band of the night as well.
The second band, Children of Bodom, was one of my very first metal bands back in 9th grade. Being able to see a full live show from them was pretty awesome (I skipped them at Mayhem 2013) and they performed well. They wrote some tasty riffs back in the day, and the new material they performed was pretty damn heavy. They're pretty silly in some areas, and I'm not about to start listening to them again, but it was still a solid performance.
Third up was Suicidal Tendencies on their last show of the tour. The show was largely exactly the same as when they opened for Slayer in 2014, so it was great live energy but nothing to write home about musically. Having Lombardo on the kit has most definitely put even more energy into the band though, the dude is an animal. Also they actually played motherfucking Institutionalized this time, sorry Dime.
Last up was the headliner, Megadave. The mixing was off at first, not being able to hear Dave's guitar for the opener (Hangar 18), but it got fixed. The crowd push was punishing, and not in a "let's all really get into the music" type of crowd push. I'm only able to get into that for bands I really love, and to be honest I don't listen to Megadeth all that much anymore. Halfway through In My Darkest Hour I decided I didn't care about being in front of Dave, and went off to the side to watch the show. This was better because it gave me a better view of newbie Kiko's shredding abilities and Chris Adler punishing the shit out of his drum kit. Kiko nailed the Tornado of Souls solo fucking PERFECTLY. One of my all time favorite concert moments. The band fucked up a few times, surprisingly because of Chris. There was a moment in Symphony of Destruction where there was a new 3 second pause because he forgot wtf he was doing. The dude might be stretching himself thin between the two bands, but for the most part he was godly all night. Setlist was good, especially since they didn't play A Tout Le Monde.
Havok: 7/10 Children of Bodom: 7/10 Suicidal Tendencies: 7/10 Megadeth: 8/10
Yeah it'll be interesting to see what Adler does going forward with both Megadeth and Lamb of God both in the middle of touring for a new album. You have to think eventually he'll have to pick one.
Super jelly that you met Lombardo as well, and I'm glad Megadeth's setlist has improved a bit.
Fuck me, just got back from Maiden show #1 (Detroit). There will be SET AND SHOW SPOILERS so heads up to anyone that is trying to go in blind. This was absolutely incredible. This wasn't just a show, it was a straight up experience. I had only seen them one time previous to this on the Maiden England tour so to see them in a normalized album cycle tour setting was outstanding. They were pure perfection. Also, finally got to meet a forum member which was pretty dope @JLRedWing13
So my day started out as waking up early as shit to a text an hour before my shift started from the guy who said he was covering for me that said "My bad man, can't make it in today." Fun. Called my manager up and he was cool so thank god for that because I feel like a total dick when I no call no show. Picked up two of my buddies and then we hit the road. 5 and a half fucking hours later, we are in Detroit. Being woken up early + not sleeping from the excitement, I was pretty beat. I copped a Book Of Souls Eddie Zippo Lighter which was awesome looking. All of my exhaustion melted away when Maiden hit the stage though. We missed The Raven Age and arrived like 15 minutes before they took the stage. Holy fuck, man. These guys continue to show me why they're my favorite band in the world. They were absolutely perfect. Bruce, Janick and Nicko were energetic and just fueled the non stop fun of this show. Adrian, Dave and Steve hit every note just magnificently. They never wavered, never fucked up. It was pummeling and they blew me the fuck away. So worth the drive. The new materiel sounded great live and was alot of fun. The set itself was so damn cool. So many surprises and rarities. The stage set up was phenomenal. They had a flag representing each song that changed from tune to tune. Blood was dripping down from Nicko's drumset and filling out the Mayan coin on the ground. They had a giant Mayan Eddie running around during Book Of Souls attacking members, stopped when Bruce finally got ahold of him and ripped his heart out ) also a giant inflatable BOS Eddie with glowing red eyes and inflatable demons during NOTB. This band just plays and performs like no one else. What they do is art straight up. Even if you're not that big of a fan, try to make it down to a show because I guarantee you will not regret it. Their performance is matched by no other. I just finished the six hour drive back (I got a little lost at one point, because GPS on phone died and I had to rely on instinct lol). The best part? I get to do this all again tomorrow night in Chicago. God fucking bless you Maiden.
Set 1. If Eternity Should Fail 2. Speed Of Light 3. Children Of the Damned 4. Tears Of a Clown 5. The Red and the Black 6. The Trooper 7. Powerslave 8. Death Or Glory 9. Book Of Souls 10. Hallowed Be Thy Name 11. Fear Of the Dark 12. Iron Maiden
Encore 13. Number Of the Beast 14. Blood Brothers 15. Wasted Years
I will admit that during one the Book of Souls songs I didn't know that well I was basically just watching the stage and not paying attention to the music. At that point it was like it turned into like a parody video, all the guys were high energy and power stancing and then you've got Dave just being neat and smiling and standing in place. The show was great as always and I loved it, but it was also funny to step back and not take it seriously lol I've now notched four tours 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2016
