Gov. Quinn signed a bill today to abolish the death penalty in Illinois. He also commuted the sentences of the 15 remaining on death row to life without parole.
i dont really see the point for death row if youre sentanced to death just kill them asap why wait?
Most people on death row are in the middle of appeals. they cant just kill someone. they have to do a fuck ton of planning and a lot of details go into it.
WHY! this is so stupid i totally believe in the death penalty
Because Illinois has executed 13 innocent people. Can't bring 'em back when they find out afterwards through DNA, etc.
That is so sad. I also feel sorry for the people who were innocent but had to stay in prison for decades because they didn't use DNA to prove anything...

It's actually cheaper to house them for life.
THE MOAR YOU KNOW~
No. It costs over 30k a year to house an inmate. It costs less than a dollar to take them out back and shoot them in the head. Illinois ain't concerned with the cost. We have a 15 billion dollar deficit. Our governor got elected on the promise that the state was going to borrow more money and not pay their bills.

are we talking criminals from years ago orrr...? because they would be stupid not to take DNA into account nowadays
Yes, from prior to DNA being widely accepted as evidence. Gov. Ryan put a moratorium on executions 11 years ago, then he went to prison. He also commuted the sentences of 169 death row inmates to life in prison.

Really? I've always read/heard that it's cheaper to not kill them.
I'm also not concerned with the cost either, just makes for a better argument, when discussing this issue with other people, lol.

Texas agrees with you. They put you on a fast track to death if convicted and sentenced to death in Texas. Here in Illinois we had inmates who had been sitting on death row since the early 80's. The legal system allows them to appeal their cases for years and for some of the silliest reasons.

making bud legal so prisons arent filled up with non violent criminals
And with death row, it's a much more complicated process than that.
Edit: Jeff got to it first.
