End of the day it was still Lucas's story, and now we're seeing what happens without his seal of approval.
Dont get me wrong, the Star Wars EU eventually became a mess with all the books, comics, video games, RPGs, tv shows, tv specials, etc. But at least the mainline movies had vision and direction. And a lot of the EU side shit had value too.
Disney has the annoying habit of not allowing any protagonists to truly be evil with Star Wars too. Oh Snoke, the big bad of this new trilogy? Yea, he's just a punk bitch who dies right away before doing anything really evil.
Kylo Ren, the new Vader? Yea hes also just a punk bitch with daddy issues, who seems to be struggling with turning good.
Finn, the first storm trooper in the movies with a real back story? Oh he turns good after his first mission.
Oh the new elite Empire chick in Battlefail 2? She turns good after the second mission because she feels bad.
Hell even in Rebels they explain away that the clones were mind controlled into killing the Jedi, and weren't actually in league with the Emperor. Like wtf? Battlefront 2's 501st campaign was so much better. They respected the Jedi, but end of day they were loyal to Palpatine and did what they had to do, and went on to become Vader's fucking fist. None of this computer chip "we had no control" bullshit.
I highly recommend even though you’re hating on the company right now that you go to Disney when the new Star Wars land opens up. The stuff they have already was incredible and turned me into a fan of the movies
You tryin to be a hero fool? You wanna see badass mother fucker?! I'll show ya a badass!!!
Nah, I'm still hoping they get better as they go. The universe has 1,000 years of history to pick through. None of the trilogies are perfect. The OT, prequels, new trilogy, and TV trilogy all have their faults.
After this trilogy is over, I'm done with Disney Wars trilogies. They have no idea how to make a cohesive Star Wars trilogy. Might still watch an anthology film here and there

Solo looks meh, but it will still be fun.
The biggest issue with The Last Jedi is that Rian shot down everything JJ tried to set up in TFA. Fuck that guy, I hope he loses his future trilogy over it. He fucked it up. TLJ wasn't necessarily a bad movie, but it was a terrible sequel.
I'm hopeful that by each director getting their own trilogy, instead of different people telling different chapters of a whole story, that they will flow together better and have much improved continuity. The people behind Game of Thrones want to do Star Wars. This is not a bad thing. This is good. They love to explore the old history of Westeros. If the same holds true for their SW project, we may be in for a real treat.
I still want a Plageus movie. A Thrawn Trilogy. Gimme a Sith Bane trilogy plz. I'll take a Wedge "Top Gun" space war dogfight movie or two. An Old Republic Tarantino Sword fight movie ala Kill Bill. Sign me the fuck up. I need a Dark Sabre movie. I will give a fistful of cash, no, make it two fistfuls of cash for a Saving Private Ryan style Order 66 movie.

Thing is, Disney only gives a fuck about money. They don't care about lore or history or any of that. They're not gonna venture into territory only Star Wars geeks would know because it cuts down the size of the audience going to see the movie. Look at the Casino scene from Last Jedi, man. That was like a half hour of filler buddy-comedy bullshit.
You might not like what their doing with the movies but what they are doing at the parks in phenomenal. You may get ho hum movies but what you are getting in return with Disney owning it is being able to visit parks and being immersed in the movies and seeing everything come to life.
