i usually do the former where i do as much weight as i can while still hitting the target reps. its not like youre on a time limit in terms of increasing weights or developing a certain size. in other words its not like you have a deadline to achieve a goal. you will get there eventually so why does it matter how fast you get there. i know thats a shitty attitude to have when you want to be motivated but you want to set a plan and stick to it and once it plan is over, revise the plan as you gain knowledge about your personal progress.
I wonder how many reps each person could lift of their own bodyweight? I'm sure that would make a fairly level playing field? I reckon I could bench probably 12 x if not 15 x my own weight at the moment I would seriously struggle to do 20 x
So I was doing deadlift at the gym today.....doing 3 x 6 x 100kg....felt good......good posture and form and keeping "tight"......when all of a sudden on one lift I caught my left gnad under the bar and trapped it between the bar and my leg..... :-t
I prefer to start with as much weight as possible for my first set (based on whether I'm doing endurance or strength training) so that I know what I can do without priming my muscles. My goal is to be functionally strong, and you generally don't have time to warm up before doing something physical in day-to-day life.... Still increase from there though, once my muscles are warmed up.

That's kinda been my theory behind the way I workout. I've always tried to train more towards explosive strength and endurance. Being super strong for a brief period isn't as useful to me as being able to keep going at a high pace for a long time. Irl if I need to move a 150 lb object, I'm not going to go move something that weighs 100lbs first just to warm up, I'm just gonna grab the ting and go.
