Not true. I will admit though that what one finds gimmicky is to some degree opinion rather then fact. Some it is pretty obvious, while others near a gray area. I don't find DM gimmicky at all (at the moment). I consider corpse paint gimmicky, I don't consider bloodbath gimmicky. You are free to form your own opinion of what is gimmicky. In fact you are free to even like gimmick in your metal. Just because I hate it doesnt mean you do.
Gore qualifies just as much as vikings, pirates, Corpse paint (which is dumb really), and any other you said before.
yes,,,, that DOES look gimmicky. A band doesn't automatically become gimmick-less just because you happen to like them. .... it just doesnt work that way.
oh... and Carcass and Aborted. They had gimmicks too. Especially Carcass who came to back when all the DM bands were trying to be more brutal than the next. They got away from that after heartwork.

don't tell anyone here, but i've seen them in concert probably 4-5 times. and even gave Jeff a high-five at one of their shows. :-)) Yep, I'm hardcore like that.
BTW...i liked KISS's music before i knew what they looked like. I was 4 when i got Love Gun
Alive II was the first album I ever bought with my own money. I still have it 31 years later. I have bought several other records, gave 'em a listen and then gave 'em away because I didn't care for the music. KISS has never fallen into that category. Ace Frehley has been so influential to so many guitarists that it's not even funny. Hell, when I sign my name the A's look like Ace's signature and yes, it's on purpose. I started making my A's like that when I was 13. Gimmick? Maybe, but I like it.

Album covers don't qualify as gimmicks for any bands as far as I am concerned. I wouldnt say slipknot has gimmick album covers. a gimmick album cover would be like offering real corpse paint inside or something like that.
every DM band I have ever seen has never used gore blood. I've never seen bloodbath live so I can't really comment if their performance would seem gimmicky to me. I agree that the picture you posted might come off as gimmicky, however from what I have seen of the band, that is not normal.

they have a gimmick; and they don't try to hide it. That's basically the whole point of the band.
Behemoth's music is lame though, same with slipknot..... yea they have gimmicks. But they don't have any substance (music) behind those gimmicks.
Unlike other bands....... do you have any idea how many bands are out there? literally, MILLIONS!
bands have to do whatever they feel is gonna make them stand out from the bunch..... but at the end of the day, it will always come down to the quality of the music
