I can see how some artists I enjoy can be seen as "hipster hop", and I don't really give a shit, but I don't get how Kanye gets thrown in the mix. He's always been a hugely popular and had a largely mainstream audience. I do understand how that could've died down a bit with the reception Yeezus got, but for the most part most of his fans are people who love him for what they heard on the radio and such.
Regardless of the size of his scope, he's always attracted the backpacker culture. The college theme of his first 2 albums along with him working with socially conscious rappers like Talib Kweli and Common Sense started it, then he pulled in more hipster cred sampling Daft Punk and bringing Bon Iver in the studio.
It doesn't matter that much to me though. I didn't even mean hipster hop as a negative term. It is what it is. What gets called hip hop now has almost nothing to do with the original form the same way modern heavy metal has little to do with Chuck Berry. The ethical core that kept hip hop relevant has been dead for 15 years now. What's left is kinda like the GMO version. As long as I accept that, it's a lot easier for me to swallow a lot of this new shit
My top 20. Honestly I don't know why I'm numbering them. I just get stoned and jam the fuck out to all of them. But here's my shot.
