oh for sure... the first two (3 if you count that EP) were absolutely more metal-alternative then progressive. I've just never really considered alternative-metal Nu Metal, and never heard anyone say Tool was Nu Metal. By that definition though, yeah I would agree tool and deftones and SOAD are Nu Metal.... But that sure makes the genre pretty wide and almost meaningless. It's like considering Thrash metal and death metal the same thing.

dividing music into genres is pretty stupid when it comes down to it, unless you're going with "good" and "bad"
i dont agree... sometimes it's useful in giving me a starting place to look for new music. I dont like all death metal, but I like a good chunk of it... so if a band has that label then it is worth me checking out. I dont even have to waste my time listening to anything labeled country because I know I wont like it.

It depends who is defining it. We all obviously have a different opinion of what nu metal is and I'm sure we all put different bands into different genres than they want to be. If a band labels themselves then I say they are that, if not I decide what I think they are.
