New Copyright Law To See Justin Bieber Face Five Years In Prison
Bieber in prison might sound like a great idea, but at what expense? As The Gauntlet has already covered, S.978 is coming up for a vote. You might remember, this is the bill with bi-partisan support and sponsored by Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-Minnesota). It would make it a felony for Internet users to stream unlicensed content 10 times in 180 days. The bill is being pushed by the Recording Industry Association of America, the Motion Picture Association of America, and others who seek to crush to Internet freedoms for the sake of higher corporate profits. The legislation was passed unanimously by the Senate Judiciary Committee earlier this summer; introduction of a House version is expected in coming weeks.
S.978 would criminalize precisely what Justin Bieber (and his mom) did to gain global renown: Posting videos online of the young singer covering pop songs. Those videos are still on the Internet, so if Bieber doesn't pull them all down right away, he could be prosecuted and sent to the slammer for five years on felony charges. The legislation applies to an incredibly broad swath of normal social media activity: It would become a felony to post cover band songs, karaoke videos, footage of people dancing to music, videos with music playing in the background, and on and on.
FFTF encourages Internet users to visit www.FreeBieber.org to urge their Senators to oppose S.978. The site collects Photoshop renditions of Justin Bieber in jail, and urges visitors to record a video of themselves "behind bars" to post to their YouTube and Facebook accounts.

Hole Pull Out Of “Soundwave Festival” As A Result Of Limp Bizkit’s Higher Billing
Limp Bizkit‘s high billing on the upcoming “Soundwave Festival” down under has caused some controversy for the tour. Hole frontwoman Courtney Love has apparently pulled her band out of the festival after finding out that Bizkit would have a higher billing than her band.
Why the fuck is she surprised by this?

German power metal band Symphorce has disbanded after seven studio albums (last of which was "Unrestricted" in 2010). The band made the following announcement on the split:
"Bad news for all fans of German metallers Symphorce. In the following statement the band announces their breakup:
"Thank you & lights out!
"7 albums, 12 years and thousands of enthusiastic fans don't make that decision easy, but after long thoughts and lots of talks we decided together to call it a day and dissolve Symphorce. The heads are dead, the timetables of our main bands packed with dates,...... so we feel a lack of inspiration and no possibility to record more albums, play more shows with the passion and commitment needed therefore. Symphorce always stand for an absolute independent type of metal, but with our latest (and last) album "Unrestricted" we had to recognize, that we have said everything we wanted musically. It was an unbelievable, intense and fantastic time! We thank you all for your long lasting loyalty and the enthusiasm you have shown to us. We will never forget all this for sure.
Of course, we will still remain with and in our other bands and will see us for sure somewhere somewhen on this planet. And therefore, ... lights off ...spotlights on!
"Thanks for 12 fantastic years, thanks for the fulfillment of a dream! It was AMAZING!"
Members of Symphorce can be heard with other projects: singer Andy B. Franck is currently busy with Brainstorm, guitarist Markus Pohl is with Mystic Prophecy and drummer Steffen Theurer is with Watch Me Bleed.

A MAJORITY OF METAL FANS ARE AT RISK OF DEPRESSION? THAT’S WHAT A NEW ACADEMIC STUDY SAYS
Metal fans listen to heavy, aggressive, and sometimes even brutal music because they’re…depressed? Well according to a new study conducted by University of Melbourne researcher Dr. Katrina McFerran, young music fans who are at risk of depression are more likely to listen to heavy metal music. Dr. McFerran reportedly conducted in-depth interviews with 50 young people aged between 13 and 18, along with a national survey of 1000 listeners, in an attempt to determine why many young metal fans use the genre in a negative way. In her study, she concluded the following:
“Most young people listen to a range of music in positive ways; to block out crowds, to lift their mood or to give them energy when exercising, but young people at risk of depression are more likely to be listening to music, particularly heavy metal music, in a negative way. Examples of this are when someone listens to the same song or album of heavy metal music over and over again and doesn’t listen to anything else. They do this to isolate themselves or escape from reality. If this behavior continues over a period of time then it might indicate that this young person is suffering from depression or anxiety, and at worst, might suggest suicidal tendencies.”
Now we don’t have any academic studies or research to full debate Dr. McFerran, but her study seems like it’s promoting an (sometimes) untrue stereotype of metal fans. It seems that her conclusion, that metal music is being used for negative purposes, simply seems unfair. I mean, has she ever heard songs like Lamb Of God’s “Set To Fail”? Wait…bad example. You can read more about Dr. McFerran’s study over at the University Of Melbourne’s website.
