Strange Particles May Travel Faster than Light, Breaking Laws of Physics

Nothing goes faster than the speed of light. At least, we didn't think so.

New results from the CERN laboratory in Switzerland seem to break this cardinal rule of physics, calling into question one of the most trusted laws discovered by Albert Einstein.

Physicists have found that tiny particles called neutrinos are making a 454-mile (730-kilometer) underground trip faster than they should — more quickly, in fact, than light could do. If the results are confirmed, they could throw much of modern physics into upheaval.

"The consequences would be absolutely revolutionary and very profound," said physicist Robert Plunkett of the Fermilab laboratory in Batavia, Ill., who was not involved in the new study. "That's why such a claim should be treated very carefully and validated as many ways as you can."

    Rewriting the rules

The results come from the OPERA experiment, which sends sprays of neutrinos from CERN in Geneva to the INFN Gran Sasso Laboratory in Italy. Neutrinos don't interact with normal atoms, so they simply pass through the Earth as if it were a vacuum.

After analyzing the results from 15,000 particles, it seems the neutrinos are crossing the distance at a velocity 20 parts per million faster than the speed of light. By making use of advanced GPS systems and atomic clocks, the researchers were able to determine this speed to an accuracy of less than 10 nanoseconds (.00000001 seconds). [Countdown: The Coolest Little Particles in Nature]

"According to relativity, it takes an infinite amount of energy to make anything go faster than light," Plunkett told LiveScience. "If these things are going faster than light, then these rules would have to be rewritten."

Previous studies have found that certain materials can travel faster than light through a medium. For example, certain particles are able to move more swiftly than light when travelling through water or oil. However, nothing should be able to move faster than light through a vacuum.

"It's really thought to be an absolute speed limit," said Michael Peskin, a theoretical physicist at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in Menlo Park, Calif. "Quantum field theory, the mathematical theory on which basically all results in particle physics are based, has the property that signals cannot travel faster than the speed of light through a vacuum. It’s really an absolute prohibition."

    Backbone of physics

This cosmic speed limit, 299,792,458 meters per second (about 700 million miles an hour), forms the backbone of Einstein's seminal Theory of Special Relativity, published in 1905. To rewrite this law would have broad-ranging implications, including even the possibility of time travel.

And the findings aren't just in conflict with existing theory, but other measurements as well. For example, a famous study from the Kamiokande II experiment in Japan of the supernova SN1987A, which lies about 168,000 light years from Earthin the Large Magellanic Cloud, found that light and neutrinos that departed this exploded star arrived at Earth within hours of each other. This measurement was used to prove that neutrinos travel within 1 part in 100,000,000 of the optical speed of light.

Yet the new OPERA discovery suggests that neutrinos actually surpass the speed of light by 60 nanoseconds over 730 kilometers, which corresponds to 2 parts in 100,000, "which exceeds the SN1987A limit by a factor of more than 2,000!" astronomer Derek Fox of Pennsylvania State University wrote in an email. "So the observation is in dramatic conflict with the SN1987A result (which is not in doubt)."

But this doesn't mean that the OPERA results are wrong, Fox said. He suggested some theoretical solution, perhaps even involving string theory, could reconcile the two measurements.

    Inviting skepticism

Realizing full well how scandalous the results will be if they are borne out, the scientists behind OPERA, led by Antonio Ereditato of the University of Bern, have decided to make their data public, in hopes of inviting scrutiny that could make sense of such radical findings. The scientists also intend to gather more data and further analyze their measurements in order to establish them more fully, or refute them. Their results will be published Friday (Sept. 23) on the physics preprint site ArXiv.

One of the best hopes to verify or disprove the findings comes from Fermilab's MINOS experiment, which also sends neutrinos flying underground over a similar distance to end up at the Soudan mine in Minnesota. In 2007, MINOS researchers found a trend in their data that suggested neutrinos might be arriving early, as they do in the new CERN data. However, the experiment at the time did not have enough precision to rule out the possibility that the results were a statistical fluke. [Gallery of Mysterious Lights]

"There was something that could have been a fluctuation in the direction of things arriving early, but it didn't have enough significance for us to make such a claim," said Plunkett, who is a co-spokesperson for MINOS. "Obviously, the hunt is on and we'll be upgrading that previous measurement and also implementing something we already had in the works, which is a plan to make improvements so we can reduce our errors. One of our next objectives is going to be trying to verify or disprove this result as hard as we can."

CERN plans to discuss the findings Friday during a public seminar that will be broadcast at http://webcast.cern.ch.

BEIJING — A Chinese man has been detained on suspicion of keeping six women in secret underground rooms as his sex slaves for two years and killing two of them, a state-owned newspaper reported Friday.

The Southern Metropolis Daily said that over the past two years, the man, Li Hao, allegedly kidnapped women who worked as hostesses at karaoke bars and locked them in two small rooms he had dug beneath a rented basement in Luoyang city in Henan province.

The secret rooms were located in a residential complex away from his home, where his wife and son lived unaware of the alleged kidnappings, the report said citing unnamed police sources.

A publicity official for the city's police department confirmed that a man named Li Hao who works for the city's technological supervision bureau had been taken into custody. The official, who would give only his surname, Li, declined to provide further details, citing an ongoing investigation.

The newspaper reported Li was a former firefighter and claimed he regularly raped the women and would give them food only once every two days to keep them physically weak. It described the rooms the women ate, slept and defecated in as dank and smelly.

Over time, some of the captives started competing with one another for his attention, the report said, and two of them ended up fighting. Li allegedly killed one of them with the help of another woman, the paper said.

He also allegedly killed one of the other women who was said to have been "disobedient," the report said, adding he allegedly buried both bodies in the corner of one of the rooms.

Li only let some of the women out when he wanted them to perform sexual services for other men to earn money for him, it said. It was on one of these outings that one of the women escaped and went to the police, the report said.

Police caught him on Sept. 6 as he tried to escape the city, it said.

Reuters YADA YADA YADA: The excuse "yada yada yada" - made famous by the television show starring Jerry Seinfeld (pictured) - didn't go down well in court for a woman pleading guilty to driving without a licence.
The excuse "yada yada yada" - made famous by the television show Seinfeld - didn't go down well in court for a woman pleading guilty to driving without a licence.

Kristine Annette Cosh appeared relaxed in Ipswich Magistrates Court in Queensland, Australia, as she brushed off her offence.

When Magistrate Michael Quinn asked if she had any reasons for driving while unlicensed, her response was casual: "I'm a full time student, single mother and yada yada yada", the Queensland Times reported.

The court heard she was caught driving without a licence at 9.40am on September 1 on Smiths Rd at Goodna and she told police she had simply forgotten to renew her licence, which had expired on May 23.

Mr Quinn told Cosh that he could not accept babble as reason for her actions and fined her A$120.

There's nothing illegal about a foot fetish but police in Conway, Arkansas, are looking for a toe-sucking man they said has crossed the line into assault.

Police have received two complaints in the past week about a man who seems desperate to suck women's toes - whether they want him to or not.

"We want him off the streets," said Conway police spokeswoman LaTresha Woodruff.

On September 10, Ruth Harris, 83, told police she was sitting in a chair in front of her apartment when a man approached and said he liked her feet. According to a police report, the man took off one of her shoes and began sucking on her toe.

"The man then asked if he could kiss her and she had told him no and told him he was crazy," the report stated.

The man left quickly after people walked into the apartment complex's courtyard.

A few days later, police received another call from a woman who said that she was shopping when she noticed a man staring at her.

The man then told the woman that he had a foot fetish and that "her toes are so long and succulent" and he wanted to suck them. When the woman's cell phone rang, the man retreated.

She told police the man had "messed up toes."

It is not the first time that Conway has dealt with this sort of complaint. In the 1990s, a man who was known as the "Toe Suck Fairy" kept Arkansans captivated with his foot fondling antics in Conway and Little Rock.

That assailant, Michael Robert Wyatt, pretended to be a podiatrist in order to fondle and suck a Conway woman's toes at a clothing store. He received probation, a fine and court-ordered therapy but his probation was revoked after he was arrested in another town on similar charges.

In 1991, he was convicted of making threats for telling a convenience store clerk that he wanted to cut off her feet and suck her toes while she bled to death.

Wyatt was sentenced to four years in state prison. He served just more than one year in prison, according to Conway police.

Some two decades later, police have not ruled out the possibility that the current toe-sucker could be the same man.

    Skully are you from Arkansas?

Ukraine man wins dumpling eating contest, then dies:

A 77-year-old Ukrainian man won a jar full of sour cream for coming first in a dumpling eating contest and then promptly died, local media reported.

Ivan Mendel ate 10 dumplings in half a minute to win first place and a one-litre jar of sour cream in the contest held in the town of Tokmak in the southeastern Zaporizhya region on September 18, Fakty I Kommentarii newspaper said.

Shortly afterwards, Mendel became unwell and died, according to local news websites.

Dumplings, called "vareniki" in the former Soviet republic, are a staple of Ukrainian cuisine and are often stuffed with a range of fillings from mushrooms to cherries.

BARING ALL: Thousands of people stripped to their underwear and ran through Salt Lake City to protest what they called the "uptight" laws of Utah.

Thousands of people stripped to their underwear and ran through Salt Lake City to protest what they called the ''uptight'' laws of Utah.

Undie Run organiser Nate Porter says the goal of the event on Saturday was to organise people frustrated by the conservative nature of state politics.

Nudity was prohibited by organisers. Participants donned bras,  panties, nightgowns, swimwear or colorful boxer shorts - and some  added political messages by expressing support for causes like gay marriage on their chests, backs or legs.

Salt Lake City is the home of the Mormon church, which is a  vocal opponent of gay marriage.

Porter estimates 3,000 people participated in the run, which  began in downtown Salt Lake City and circled past the state Capitol  building about two kilometres away.

More news on the infamous toe sucker:-

A man known in Arkansas as the "Toe Suck Fairy" for a series of 1990s assaults directed at women's feet has been charged with a new round of incidents more than a decade later, police said today (NZ time).

Michael Robert Wyatt, 50, was arrested on Monday after two women identified him from a photo line-up as "the man who approached them in local stores commenting on their feet and asking to suck their toes, said LaTresha Woodruff, spokeswoman for the Conway Police Department.

Wyatt was charged with two counts of misdemeanour harassment, Woodruff said.

Two women reported that in recent weeks, they were shopping in stores when a man approached them and started talking to them about their toes and asking to suck them. One woman described the man as having "really messed up toes."

Their reports came after an 83-year-old woman called police on September 10 and told them she was sitting in a chair in front of her apartment when a man approached her. He took off one of her shoes and began sucking her toes, police said.

After her account was reported by the media, the two other women came forward.

A news release about the arrest did not mention the elderly woman's report or whether they consider her case to be connected.

In the 1990s, Wyatt pretended to be a podiatrist in order to fondle and suck a Conway woman's toes at a clothing store. He received probation, a fine and court-ordered therapy. But his probation was revoked after he was arrested in another town on similar charges.

In 1991, Wyatt was convicted of making threats for telling a convenience store clerk that he wanted to cut off her feet and suck her toes while she bled to death.

Wyatt was sentenced to four years in state prison. He served just over a year in prison, according to Conway police.

In 1999, he was arrested again, police said, after asking a woman in a northwest Arkansas Walmart if she wanted him to amputate her feet and showing her pictures of women with no feet.

Detectives had been trying to track Wyatt down for the last two weeks.

HAVANA, Cuba — Fidel Castro mocked President Barack Obama on Thursday for saying he's open to changing U.S. policy toward Cuba if there is change on the island first, calling the U.S. leader "stupid."

Writing in one of his semiregular essays published across state-run media, Castro reacted with sarcasm to reported comments that Obama would be open to a different relationship with Cuba when there is political and social change.

"How kind! How intelligent!" Castro said. "Such kindness still has not allowed him to understand that 50 years of blockade and crimes against our country have not been able to bow our people."

Cuba uses the term "blockade" to refer to the nearly five-decades-old economic embargo against the island.

"Many things will change in Cuba, but they will change through our efforts and in spite of the United States. Perhaps that empire will fall first," Castro added, a reference to the United States.

Castro wrote glowingly about Obama when he was elected in 2008, saying, "The intelligent and noble face of the first black president of the United States since its founding two and one-third centuries ago as an independent republic had transformed itself under the inspiration of Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King into a living symbol of the American dream."

But Castro has increasingly shown disillusionment as Cuban-U.S. relations remain in a deep freeze, despite measures undertaken by Obama allowing more remittances and travel to the island.

Castro also criticized as "brutal, blundering and expected" a U.S. judge's recent ruling that an imprisoned Cuban intelligence officers must serve his parole in the United States instead of returning to his family on the island after he is released in early October.

The case of Rene Gonzalez, who holds dual American and Cuban citizenship, and four other agents imprisoned for espionage in the U.S. is one of the Cuban government's chief complaints about Washington, and newspapers and airwaves on the island call each day for their release.

"This is how the empire responds to the increasing demand around the world for their freedom," Castro wrote. "If it weren't so, the empire would cease to be an empire and Obama would cease to be stupid."

Gonzalez and the others, collectively known as the "Cuban Five," were convicted in 2001 of attempting to infiltrate U.S. military installations in South Florida. They also monitored militant anti-Castro groups and tried to place operatives inside the campaigns of anti-Castro politicians.

One of the five was convicted of murder conspiracy related to the 1996 shootdown by Cuban fighter jets of planes flown by an exile group.

Havana lauds the men as heroes. It contends that they were no threat to the U.S. government and were unfairly tried and given exorbitant sentences not commensurate with their activities.
