I don't quite get dealing McCutchen from the Pirates' perspective. If they pick up his option, they have him for two more seasons, and he had a down year by his standards. Why not hold onto him and see if he rebounds instead of selling low? He's only 30.
I don't think so. I think Cashman is just pretending to show interest to drive up the price. Kinda like how 'The Yankees showing interest in Cespedes' rumors got really popular a week or two ago. He reached out to David Price last offseason and then the Red Sox overpaid the hell out of him just cuz they thought they Yankees were actually serious about signing him, which I don't think they ever were.

I think what it is is that they're worried he won't rebound. Their top prospect is Austin Meadows, who they would slide into Left and move Marte to Center. Plus, even after a down season for him, they will still get a nice exchange from whoever they trade him to. Losing Jim Benedict to the Marlins was a bigger blow than most people realize. A lot of the pitchers he had helped fix regressed significantly in 2016 so they may not be able to survive on scrap heap pitchers anymore. As a team they dropped off a good bit this year without significant injuries outside Cole. The Neil Walker trade was a bust. They're a small payroll team so they can't afford to sit back and hope McCutchen rebounds. Personally, I hope he ends up with the Dodgers or Mariners cuz (as always) fuck the Nationals
i dont see chicago letting him stay in the AL doe. Would be stupid.
If Boston includes either Andrew Benintendi or Yoan Moncada, the deal will be done. Ben Cherington was on the cusp of making the Red Sox into the same mold as the Cubs. Dombrowski inherited a cache of young talent to plunder away on expensive stars and that kinda seems like his MO at this moment
At least Moncada is gone. I think he was getting pretty close to the majors and I wasn't looking forward to seeing him ~20 times a season. Hopefully Sale throws another temper tantrum and rips up all the Red Sox jerseys. I hear he's not the greatest clubhouse influence.
Yeah it's gonna suck seeing Sale more often but I think it'll hurt em in the long run. I really really wanted Cashman to sign Moncada when he became available and I was low key pretty heated when I heard the Red Sox got him. Glad he's playing for anyone else now.
Dombrowski is at his best when he has prospects to deal. You know he'll get the most for them. It makes the White Sox worse while our window is open so I'm ok with this deal.
Just hoping the Indians don't get Encarnacion, or at least give him a massive overpay.
The fact that he's a DH and most of the DH needy big spenders are off the board now limits his market. It's basically down to the Indians and Red Sox and the Red Sox don't seem really interested in putting a lot of money into a DH. He also has a QO, so whoever signs him loses their first round pick
