Its something new and different for metal fans, I feel. Heavy music, with dystopian cyberpunk, and 80s slasher horror, and exploitation horror-porn vibes. Dark music with dark themes, but its something different than death or black metal. At least as far as the darkwave, horror synth goes.
The mellower stuff I think has a nice aesthetic as well. Cant really put my finger on why that appeals to metal fans, but it still does.
I could make a solid argument that video games are the single most important influence on the tastes of millenials. Not just music. Storytelling, imagery, etc. I'm not a gamer, so it's really obvious to me when odd cultural quirks come out that I'm not privy to that once I hang out with my gamer friends I usually see something there that makes me understand their sudden appeal
Rap music is pretty heavily influenced by video games on a sonic level. I think that's why the lyrical aspect has diminished so much in such a short amount of time. People are just used to hearing rap music in the background of their car race or extreme sport video games that they don't really pay attention to the lyrics as much anymore. EDM/techno music's current popularity can easily be traced to video games
I can cede some influence to retro film music. That's why you have stuff like Goblin playing Housecore. But overall, I firmly believe video games are the dominant influence
1.) Black Sabbath 2.) Lamb Of God/Anthrax/Deafheaven 3.) Slayer/Testament/Carcass 4.) Megadeth/Suicidal Tendencies/Havok 5.) Iron Maiden (Detroit) 6.) Iron Maiden (Chicago) 7.) Hatebreed 8.) The Cure 9.) Black Sabbath 10.) Anthrax/Death Angel 11.) Korn/Breaking Benjamin
17. Dragged Into Sunlight/Primitive Man/Cult Leader
18. Boris/Earth
19. Acid Witch/The Cosmic Dead
20. A Storm of Light
21. Baroness/Pallbearer
22. Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats/Danava/The Shrine 23. Deftones 24. Cobalt/Mantar 25. God Is An Astronaut 26. If These Trees Could Talk 27. Crystal Castles 28. Black Sabbath

I absolutely disagree. To pretend that video games have no influence on the genre would be a lie but claiming it as the dominant influence is just silly. If anything, its a genre built on nostalgia or some sort of faux nostalgia considering most fans of the genre werent even alive in the 80s.
I mean come on. Listen to the first 30 seconds of this album and check out the album artwork. https://youtu.be/JO29ROFQmT8
Does anything about this scream "video games?" Thats straight Carpenter influence through and through.
How are the two related? Other than Vice City being set in the 80s? Its not like Vice City's soundtrack was full of synth. It was more 80s hair bands and pop like Michael Jackson.
