The NFL is more concerned about their image than they are any one player. They are trying to please a family environment because that is what brings in the most money. If they appear to be a bunch of criminals than people will stop coming to the games and they will not make as much money. Does anyone really think anyone in the NFL cares about AP or Rice or any of this shit? No... they care about their dollars, that's it.
It's kinda like the Atlanta hawks owner making those comments about trying to appeal to white middle class. That shit wasn't racist, it was all about money. And people blew it up like the dude was a racist, when in fact the dude was a shrewd business man.
Sure, they're concerned about their image. However, they know better than all of us that NFL players get arrested at a lower rate than the rest of the population. Why this action?
They would be infinitely better served by saying something to the effect of "The NFL does not condone any action by one of our players that violates federal or state law. The NFL is a positive force in our players lives, as shown by [canned statistic 1], [canned statistic 2] and [canned statistic 3]."
Instead, they open themselves to even more criticism by in effect saying "Don't hate us, we'll handle it." Because more often than not, they can't handle it. Instead, they're in a much better situation to say "We don't handle legal matters for our players. That's for the courts." It's just a better sentiment at all, but the NFL is so obsessed with their PR, that they aren't able to just take a hands off approach to their discipline.
I just think in a complete general way that peoples personal lives shouldn't effect their job status unless it directly interferes with their job duties
I got the belt from my Mom multiple times when I was a kid. This whole thing is ridiculous. He clearly didn't do this shit on a rampage. It was discipline but you even yell at your kid in public and expect DCFS at your doorstep.
I'm for spanking in terms of disciple. I was spanked. I turned out fine.
Did you tho?
My issues arent because I was spanked as a child. I was rarely spanked anyways. Most of the time I was put on "timeout" and when I was older I got grounded... a lot.

Im not going to defend their position- I'm just stating the obvious that the NFL organization doesn't give a fuck about any of the players. At the end of the day all that is important to them is the image of the organization, such that it will promote increased revenue into the elite 1%. You say "wouldnt they be better served with some canned legal message" and I will just say maybe, maybe not. The American public as a whole are some pretty ignorant, closed-minded, uneducated group of stupid cattle that are easy to sway. So it appears the NFL deals with this by suspending the player, cutting guys from your team, and just distancing them as far as possible from inappropriate behavior.
