HDMI 2.0 refreshes at 120 fps. Not going to get any higher than that when gaming in 4k anyways, and if it did i could give a shit less. I rarely play competitive games anymore.
I honestly play everything at 1080p still. Always play PS5/Xbox Series X games on performance mode. Rather play at 60fps than at 4K.
Same for PC. My current laptop has a built in 4K screen, but I always play at 1080p for better performance. My computer coming in will technically be able to play games at 4k, but I'm just going to play at 1080p. More frames > Plus, like you said, 4K monitors are stupid expensive, so I bought a 1080p monitor. 1080p only "looks bad" when downscaling on a 4K monitor. Playing 1080p natively on a 1080p monitor looks prefectly fine.
1080p is preferable to 1440p as 1440p is technically a form of 720p (divisible), so downscaling to 1080p from 1440p looks bad and has integer issues.
1080p natively on 1080p looks great 1080p downscaled from 4K can look a little fuzzy, but is overall fine 1080p downscaled from 1440p looks bad 720p downscaled from 1440p can look a little fuzzy, but is overall fine
Why do the majority of serious pc gamers play at 1440p then?

In seriousness, 1440p is perfectly fine if you are playing at 1440p. It just doesnt downscale as nicely to 1080p because its not divisible, 720p is. So if you plan to play in 720p or 1440p, get a 1440p or 720p monitor. If you plan for 4K or 1080p, get a 4K or 1080p monitor.
I do agree that performance mode is supreme, 30FPS just ain't it nowadays. I'd much rather have buttery smooth gameplay than some extra graphical effects. 1080p works fine for me on my laptop but when it inevitably dies and I move to the desktop life (I only got a gaming laptop because I was still OTR trucking at the time) I'll probably aim for a 1440p monitor with an at least 165hz refresh rate. Gonna be getting a springing for a 4K TV and a Series X sometime this spring but I'll be setting every game to performance mode, the 4K is just for video playback.

Well yeah no shit Sherlock.
You are mansplaning to us how a computer works basically. Kill yourself.

I can work with 30FPS, though it's not preferable. It's playable in most cases as long as it isn't coupled with frame dips. I actually play Doom Eternal at 45fps on my current laptop because it won't run it at a full 60fps for whatever reason, and I didn't have a hard time playing it. Also the Switch often outputs at 30fps comparatively, but I go with the Switch for a lot of multiplat games just because I like the Switch so much. Also, like, Nier Automata only runs at 30fps on Switch, but ONLY the Switch version has all DLC on cart/disc, so I went with the Switch version to have it all on cart. But that's very case-by-case for me, and never related to wanting the game to "look better". 99% of the time, I want to play at as high a framerate as I can.
Honestly thinking about it, and my gaming habits, the computer I just bought is complete fucking overkill, and I will never get the most out of it lol I just really wanted to be able to play Doom The Dark Ages.

From what I've seen, and lot of games look better and load faster, but I should probably just build a PC again.
4k monitors are just crazy expensive.
If.im building a PC, again, it's to play games at their full potential.

Not because I didn't know how it works

Always prefer 60 obviously, but I'll be able to live with GTA 6 at 30 lol ( at least until it's out on PC)
