One of my best friends has been dating a guy whos dad was a cop., Anyways, he is nice to her and makes her happy, but idk how im going to avoid calling him out in his shit. Only met him once but he is always wearing a blue lives matter shirt or bandanna.
Fuck that shit makes me heated lol. Good thing im an adult and we don’t actually hang out with our friends much anymore lol
By all accounts he seems like a nice guy and is just supporting cops in general, but it just really erks me the wrong way.
Yes, cops lives matter just like “all lives matter”
but the root of the issue is that most people who wear this stuff sometimes dont even know what its about. The “thin blue line” is in response to brutality against police.
The problem is, people use it to overshadow BLM. i don’t necessarily condone everything with BLM either, but what its really supposed to be about, police brutality against African Americans, i fully support.
From 2007-2018 there were on average 94 sworn in police officers killed per year. Of those 94, only about 1/2 of them came in response felonious activities. The other 1/2 were all accidents. So if you round up its 50 per year. In that same time, on average 404 Americans died per year at the hands of police officers.
The issue is, a police office signs up to protect and serve. It is their job to sometimes put their lives in dangerous situations. You know this signing up.
I feel like the thin blue line thing is just taking away from a problem we have in America.
Idk. Maybe im in the wrong because i cant even really figure out why it bugs me. Just rubs me the wrong way I guess.
I'm so thankful my girlfriend's dad doesn't believe in that shit.
For background, he just recently retired after serving 30 years in the Army and was a rank of Command Sergeant Major.
I was talking to him about cops/military, and he said he thinks that cops shouldn't be allowed to fire on an individual unless they know 100% that person has a gun and is for sure intending to use it on them. He said, if you're not willing to take a risk, then don't fucking sign up. He also told me about how many people he saw that would join the military just cause they wanted to hurt people and doesn't doubt that the same thing happens in police forces. Said that there are a lot of scary people that join up for the wrong reasons. It really opened my eyes about that line of work being able to hear it directly from someone involved.
