If you think that sunbather defines that your fucking delusional and there is just no other word for it..
How incredibly close minded of you.
It might be that album for some people.
Taylor swift might be that for some people Since when do I gaf about some people..
Difference is Deafheaven are breaking new ground. While they didn't invent the post-black metal/blackgaze genre, they're take on it is something else and it's reaching out to a lot of people. Even if they're not topping lists liked I'd like them to be, the fact is that the way Deafheaven combines the sounds of black metal, shoegaze, post-rock, screamo and whatever else so seamlessly is reaching out to a lot of people. Both in the metal world and way outside of it. I know plenty of people who absolutely love Sunbather and listen to a shit ton of other metal and other who loves it that don't listen to like any other metal. If you care so much about what the "music world" thinks, you'd take note that Sunbather is on pretty much every major 2013 list, from metal magazines to Spin and Wired, and that even though they didn't get the nomination, they were on the ballot to be nominated for a grammy.
I have nothing against shoegaze, I just think Agalloch's work is far more effective when it comes to pushing the limits of post-rock and black metal. I get what Deafheaven were trying to do I just honestly don't think it all comes together as well as it could.
Both are incredible bands, but I don't really feel they should really be compared. Sure both are some sort of black metal with some post-rock inklings, but really Agalloch fuses bm with neo-folk and Deafheaven fuses bm with shoegaze, which are completely different styles of music. I personally prefer shoegaze. And it's easier to make statement like Agalloch > Deafheaven because Agalloch has been around way longer and thus have a bigger catalogue.
