If I get a dog, I want a dog big enough to eat somebody, which is also why I wouldn't get a shelter dog that may have a questionable history. My wife's cousin has the smartest German Sheppard I've ever seen, so I may try to get one of his pups.

Do it. I got my beagle from a litter that an uncle had and it was the best decision of my life.

We had our Beagle until she passed away at the age of 16. I was 11 at the time

    I miss Maggie :(

Jobe, many shelters have the history of their animals and put them through behavior tests to see how adoptable they are and which environment theyd be best suited for

Damn dude sorry. My beagle was alive for 17 years of my life. Angel was the best dog I've ever had. I remember when my mom texted me in class and told me she died, I started to cry right there in class.

    That's awful :(

I watched two of my dogs (one being the beagle, Maggie) pass away at home. I'm just glad I was there with them

All of my dogs have been given up to someone else before they passed on. Dixie might be the first dog to break that trend......

Yeah dude it was sad, I couldn't imagine watching them pass. My dad and I buried Angel out in the woods and gave her a branch as a headstone and I was a mess when we did that :(

I really want to, but we also have to do a fuck ton of traveling for hockey, so it may not be the most practical decision right now. Their dog is such an amazing pet though. They were getting ready for a wrestling tourney the weekend we stayed there. The dog is playful as fuck, until he goes into "protect" mode. Anytime I tried to wrestle with the kids, the dog just wasnt having it. He kept growling, and grabbing me by the pant leg and shaking the fuck out of it and pulling me off anytime he thought one of the kids was getting hurt. He never tried to bite me but he let me know to leave "his" kids alone. Later that night, I stepped out at 1 in the morning for a smoke, and the dog was sleeping in the basement. I turned the knob, not making any sound because I didn't want to wake everyone, and there he is, nose pressed right to the door. Watching, waiting, neither moving or making a sound...

    Fucking want.

German Sheppard's are seriously one of the best and most loyal dogs ever. They always stay loyal to the end and will give up their life protecting you or your kids. It's really amazing to see how an animal can love so much like that. One of the main reasons why I want one as well. The only bad thing is they have hip problems(i think) when they get older that can get bad.

I get that, but those tests don't catch everything, nor does the shelter have a complete history of the animal. If it wasn't a big dog, I wouldn't care as much, but since the dog will end up bigger than my kids are currently, I'll take no chances.

and just because the father is smart doesnt mean the pups will be so idk where you got that from

Obviously it comes down to the individual dog and how they get trained, but genetics also play a part. Every pup of his that I have seen has turned out with those same basic traits.

you can adopt puppies from a lot of shelters though to.....if you look you can find them as young as 2-3 months....i recommend going this route if you want a young dog...there are so many animals that need homes

    Can't do it.

One unknown trigger, one flashback of abuse, the damage it could do in seconds to a child...

    [-(

And besides, the hypothetical puppy will be born someday eventually if I take it or not.
Somebody has to love that puppy.
Why won't you let me love that puppy B?
