It cracks me up when I think about how Erik claims to have spent so much time working on his music, but then it sounds like something I could prolly whip up in like 20 minutes on fruity loops
First off, insulting the production don't phase me cause I didn't make it, I own that beat now however. And it's an amazing fucking beat. Proud to have made such a hit wit it.
Second off, no one ever claimed that Hip Hop/RnB takes a lot of technical skill when it comes to the actual instruments. You don't have to be a piano virtuoso to make an amazing beat. It's all musically very simple. It's all a matter of learning what sounds blend well wit eachother and making something so simple sound amazing. That's the beauty and the art of it. You're basing Hip Hop on Metal talents. You ain't gonna see 300 bpm complex structures wit polyrhythms over a 7/8 time signature in Hip Hop. Doesn't mean that it takes minimal talent. It's like saying an outfielder is garbage because he can't kick a 60 yard field goal.
As far as me, the only technical aspect I could improve is my actual singing. That comes over time and I practice every day, already pleased wit where I'm at and stoked to see how I'll sound in another year. As far as writing melodies, if I write a hook in 20 minutes and that shit ends up blowing up and getting me signed, that honestly shows exactly that I been putting time in. The more time you spend writing, the easier and more natural it becomes. And obviously the better your melodies become. The majority of your time ain't put into the final product, it's in all the shitty songs you write before you get to that gold. But what do I know, the great fatfuck knows all.

And like I said you're welcome to write something better. )
Simple and slow = shit.
You better deliver.
