Sometimes it takes some bands years to find their sound and craft what they feel is the best representation of their artistic goal. I have tons of respect for their kind of patience because outcome is usually great. It took Loss 7 years to release a proper album, and Despond is one of the bets records I've ever listened to.
Well if they could dedicate all of their time to music, I'm sure they wouldn't need that long, but you don't know how they've got going on outside that. And they did have some demos and splits in between.

A big reason some of those old death metal bands had to demo their way through their early years is because there just wasn't a market for them for several years early on
Even Death had 3 highly dubbed demos before they got a label deal. That's part of the reason they're considered the originators of the genre even though 'seven churches' came out before 'scream bloody gore'
