Reminds me of when Kylesa were supposed to be direct support for Thrice back in 2011, but they had to drop off the tour. La Dispute replaced them, which they were awesome, but was bummed about Kylesa.
A lot of those modern stoner metal bands didn't emerge from the typical metal "scene". They were touring with odd styles of bands in the beginning. First time I saw Kylesa was opening for Converge
No. Mastodon touring with Cursive was more out-there, but it kinda illustrates the environment a lot of them came up in. You can't really tour with nothing but stoner metal when there's only 5-10 of those bands around and touring. Plus, some people hate the monotony. My dad used to go to Ozzfest with me. He'd enjoy himself, but kinda lament the sameness of most of the bands. He loves to remind me that the first time he saw Sabbath live was opening for Peter Frampton
First time I saw Isis, they had an unsigned Mastodon opening and the tour support was a mostly instrumental post-hardcore band called Keelhaul and an experimental rap group called Dalek
