damn! 12 inches of skin...I've always been nervous about tearing skin during a slide. Sounds like you recovered pretty well from that! and good thing the bike wasn't terribly damaged

It wasnt that bad. I mean it hurt. I was limping around for a couple weeks, but wounds heal.

There was another time it was raining, and I was turning across two lanes of oncoming traffic. I didnt think I was going that fast but when I went to make the turn my bike hit the paint stripes separating lanes of traffic and instead of turning my bike started sliding straight towards the curb and a row of trees behind it and dumping sidewise. Luckily I was able to stomp my foot on the ground to push the bike upright and straighten out the handlebar and break before I hit the curb. Mentally though, that event fucked me up big time. After that I was afraid to corner even on dry pavement. A week later due to my being a pussy on corners I almost wrecked my bike big time... Pulled off the road, took a few deep breathes and realized that I either need to stop riding today, or to put the rain incident behind me. I was able to put it behind me.... but really, you need to be prepared for anything on a bike.
now that would mess me up big time too. I think I would eventually be able to put it past me but man....that sounds pretty scary. Definitely going to stay out of the rain if it's at all avoidable
Yeah... I'd say 95% of all my close calls have come in the rain. And even though I try to avoid it, you know how dependable the weather man is. I mean sometimes they will say 0% chance of rain. You come out after work and it is a torrential downpour and you're like "FUCK. AYFKM :|"

There was another time on my new bike I was in the middle lane of a 50 mph road doing 45 mph in a complete downpour (weather said no rain that day). I figured going slower than the road was a good idea due to the loss of traction. However you can't just go 25 in a 50. Anyways.... This all happened really quick and was hard to see coming... but two cars came up behind me going 50+... one went to the right lane to pass me and the other went to the left... So I was basically sandwiched between these two cars. Then up ahead a car decided they wanted to beat these two cars and pull out of a grocery store parking lot into my lane because he didnt see me because I was so small and between these two cars.... Anyways I hit my brakes and due to the rain I just slide at 45 mph. And so I am pumping the brakes and on my horn.... and im literally a second away from dropping my bike on the pavement and just riding on top of it. (this time I was in full gear so I had a okay chance of making it though it). Anyways before that second came my brakes caught and I was able to stop inches from this dudes bumper...

And I was off my bike so quick and I wanted to just fuck this dude up.... and he rolls down his window and I scream "DUDE!!! YOU ALMOST JUST FUCKING KILLED ME!!!! ASSHOLE I ALMOST JUST FUCKING DIED!!!!" And he say to me "im so sorry man, I really didnt see you there. I feel awful. Im just so sorry." And him being so apologetic and sorry made me soften up a bit and just said "It's fine... but try and keep a better eye out for us motorcycles"

Anyways... Most riders have these sort of stories, however I dont think riding is all that dangerous. The most important thing to remember is ride like everyone is trying to kill you. And if you ever stop riding that way, then perhaps it might be a good idea to stop riding. 99.9% of motorcycle accidents happen because either 1. Alcohol 2. idiot rider poping a wheelie in rush hour traffic at 90mph. 3. The driver didnt see the motorcycle. So you just gotta count on that. When I am stopped at a stop light, I am just staring at my mirror expecting some asshole is just going to plow through me. and if that happens im prepared to jump off. Or when I am riding down a road, I am always scaning the side rodes for some asshole who might pull out in front of me, or a deer. A deer fucks up a car, a deer kills a motorcyclist. Anyways ride like that and you'll have no problems.

If I didn't have 3 kids and a wife then I would still ride on the street. They need me more than I need that bike.

Yeah... a 400-500cc bike has enough power/weight that you can take it safely on a freeway. A 200cc bike is just too light you will get pushed around at high speeds, and you dont really have the power you might need to escape bad situations you might find yourself in. A 400-500cc bike isnt crazy powerful that you will get yourself into trouble like you might a 900cc+ bike.

Also- a 400-500 cruiser is a great bike to take the DMV test on. Easy to maneuver and not too heavy.

Good post, but screw being on the freeway on a 500 lol, not enough passing power.

A 500 has more than enough passing power. You gotta remember that most 500's are a whole hell of a lot lighter then say a 900cc. Most of my riding time on my Rebel 450cc was freeway, and I never had any issues with cars pushing me around or being able to pass people. My 450cc Rebel had more acceleration at 60 than most peoples cars.

However you can't really compare it to my 900.... Last summer I decided to take one of those 360 freeway on ramps as fast as I could... So I was taking this 360 corner at maybe 50ish mph.... and so as I am coming around parallel to the freeway I look over cause I am going to have to merge and there are two cars next to me, people in the car have their mouth open, just staring at how fast I took this corner and came on.... I gave them a smile, then cranked the throttle down. 50mph -> 90mph is probably less than 2 seconds. It was boss \m/

reminds me of my friend who almost got in an accident cause a person pulled out in front of him while he was going 45mph. that person was on their phone and apparently didn't look when they pulled out

I'll have to keep all that in mind. Definitely a lot to think about. I guess if I think about everyone trying to kill me, I'll be more cautious than if I hopped on a bike and said "okay let's be reckless" lol

oh and lol at this dude flagging every post I've made in here
