I've been torrenting comics lately. I tried out recent Spiderman and gave up after about 2 issues because it was so confusing. They're so far off the trail of what that character was for its first 30 years it's not even funny. Hero books might be over
I think at a certain point, characters become iconic enough to where when you fuck with them you can do nothing but damage. Like if they revealed Mickey Mouse was a clone for the last 40 years and that his alternate reality self had taken over, people would shit. The only reason they don't in comics is because we've been conditioned now to just accept the constant tryhard cries for attention and desperate cash grabs. I saw a porn star once talk about her career. She had "retired", but discussed how if she came back she would do a gangbang. Then if she needed more money, she would fuck a black guy. So forth and so on. It's a pattern. For lack of a better example, this is how comics function now. First, give them sidekicks. Then take their powers away. Then kill them. Then bring them back. Then make somebody else take over their mantle. Etc. Its pretty played out at this point. It's awful as a dad because I'd like my kid to get into comics more, but the world they present now is so far from what he knows from movies and tv that he just gets lost and moves on
You're 100% right. I feel like no one is capable of making the next Killing Joke or Kraven's Last Hunt because the status quo of all the bullshit you described.
The last Marvel book that really blew me away was Moon Knight's 2014 series. Great visuals, and each issue was a standalone story. But of course after 6 issues the writer left
Scott Snyder and Dan Slott try to do some interesting and cool things with Batman and Spiderman, respectively. But I dont think they can do what they want with the team breathing down on them.
Snyder has added some cool lore with the Court of Owls. And The Superior Spiderman was surprisingly good
I think certain characters should be retired. Especially Superman. In a way, the fact that Green Lantern and Flash have changed from character to character has helped keep them fresh. It's no surprise to me that a character like Moon Knight that was an also-ran for its first 30 years is interesting now because he still has stories to tell. I mean, how many times can Batman and Joker face off before someone just gets tired of it and locks em in a room together?
