to you, they've lost their musical integrity. Their are many people along the way who have accepted the change in direction of many bands. Because it's not what it was, doesn't mean there wasn't any passion put into to it. Saying that they did "sellout" requires that you submit to the belief that they should never evolve. Bands change, you like or you don't.
well like the post that santana put on here said, they unnaturally changed their music style in order to sell more records and become bigger stars. you honestly cant say that all these fucking bands that get more and more soft every fucking album are all just sharing the same brain and all decide to move in that direction in their musical careers? the answer is no they are trying to get on the radio and appeal to the masses which is what we call selling out.
Bruce springsteen putting out nebraska, neil young putting out Trans, tom waits putting out swordfishtrombone -- these are changes in musical direction, they had nothing to do with trying to make money, the artists were just testing different limits of their talent.
NolaMetal, you calmed now? lol. For the past seven hours ive been busting your balls pretty hard dude. C'mon bro, everybody knows who sold out and who didn't. But, just for the record. I enjoyed every Metallica album and half of St. Anger at that.
dude im calm, i like to argue as you can see on this board. i enjoy it. id rather actually talk about music with someone than to put the word vagina in movie titles. lol . im glad you were kidding then cuz i thought u were ok until some of that garbage u said...
^the second I read that, I knew I had you right where I wanted ya and we were in for a long night. haha
haha its just ive read your other posts before and u seemed to know what you were talkin about so i was like wtf? well at least hopefully i educated someone else on this board in the subject of selling out lol
i don't understand how green day sold out someone wrote songs for teens which inspired them green day now writes songs for teens to inspire them there music seems more techique based and lyrics intelligible. i don't see the problem
i cant believe im getting back into this shit but here we go
green day had strong punk roots and strong appreciation for punk music in general. their old music sounded punk, now they wine to 13 year old girls who have 6 of their hot topic t shirts. they came from a punk scene were it was taboo to even have a major record contract never mind pocket books and shit. there sell outs get over it
Erik, i think a big reason why most bands first or second record are their best is because thye've been working on those songs for most of their life, changing them up/rewriting them as they get better and get their sound together, then all of a sudden they are pretty big and the record company wants another album asap. so they go in the studio and unlike their first album where they have been working on these songs a few years, working them up in front of crowds now they are starting from scratch and being rushed into writing and recording.
also i dont believe its always selling out if the change their sound to a softer sound, devin townsend stopped strapping young lad because he started that band when he was angry and hated everything, now he no longer feels that way so he thought it would be forced and just a lie if he continued with that band and its direction, so he started doing his dtp stuff. not everyone is like devy they may not feel the same as they did when they started a band but they dont want to try to start over so they keep the same band name but change their sound into how now want it to be....some people write from straight emotion and once your a big rockstar with a nice wad of cash in your hand, tonnes of fans , beutiful girls everywhere it hard to still have that same emotioin you did when you were a nobody that no one cared about or gave you a second glance
I think Gene Simmons had the best response on being a sell out. His was asked,"how does it feel to be part of a band that is the bigget sell out in music history?". His response, "Feels pretty good to be me and sell out New York, LA, Boston, Chicago...."
While I wouldn't say they sold out, their really old stuff was straight up hardcore punk. Now they are metalcore, but still have more hardcore punk influences than most other metalcore bands.
"yep, Im in the same boat as Gene. Why wouldn't a band want that? I'd take the limos, jets, mansions, broads, money any day of the week."
I'm not trying to sound like a dick (although it will probably come off as such), but there are musicians (and plenty of people outside the world of music) who would rather keep their integrity than become rich and famous.
It's no different in the business world. There are corporations who cut corners and commit illegal acts in the name of fattening their pockets, and there are those who sacrifice some profit in order to stay true to themselves.
Of course that is not a perfect comparison, as selling out isn't illegal (lol), but it works in kind of the same way. Not every person wishes to be as rich and famous as possible. And I realize that is an idea that has not occurred (seriously, not being condescending) to everyone.
In case people couldn't tell, this was also slightly a rant on how much I hate the idea of the "American Dream".

Nah, you don't sound like a dick at all. Your completely entitled to your opinion.
i disagree about Gene. i read his book and have been a lifelong KISS fan. He came to with country with nothing and now lives in a mansion, has a playboy playmate as a girlfriend, has tons of money. i would love to have his life
Yah hes another rich asshole joke. i could say i would want his life but i wouldnt necessarily want to be that prick. i dont understand kiss fans..they are fucking jokes and assholes. stanley and simmons could rival lars in prickness. Not only do they have tacky songs but also just exploit their fans for themselves. whats to like?
