Selling out.

Just a discussion thread. Post your thoughts on it.

Like why you think bands do it, why it happens, why most bands earlier albums are their best, etc.

For me, I think it's that, when they go and make their first album, they don't know WHAT'S gonna happen, yea, they could already be on a label, but it doesn't mean they'll go anywhere with said label, so they put every last idea they have into the Music, and make it as creative as possible. THEN, if they kick off, they're not feeling as much pressure, especially if they already have a solid fanbase, so they half ass everything. They just think it'll get them money, so fuck it. Or, sometimes they'll just run out of ideas.

Idk, I'm bored.

Post away.

I dont think its that they half ass it as much as the money gets better the more you sell out lol.

It just seems like its half assed when really its just dumbed down for a larger fanbase.

I also love that bands that talk negatively about selling out are the biggest sell outs i.e. Green Day, Metallica

There's only a few bands I've seen that keep progressing, where their later albums are better, and they happen to be my 3 favorite bands.

    Behemoth
    The Black Dahlia Murder
Nile (Their best album is easily Those Whom The Gods Detest.)

I think big record labels sign you when you have a solid fanbase then they push you to make your music more mainstream i.e. All Hope Is Gone (more mainstream)
so by record companies making you make your music more mainstream, they hope you get a larger fanbase to bring them in more money

That could be possible too Santana.

Look at Avenged Sevenfold. They got signed to Warner Bros. records for City Of Evil, and what happened? More mainstream. Although, even though they went more mainstream, I love all their albums equally.

ah yes, the old "sell out" term. I never bought into it. Mainly because the fans make it out to be a bigger deal then what it really is. It's a pretty simple concept. If you don't like the new direction of an artist, then don't listen. If you enjoy, then see you at the show.

^yah but if one of your favorite bands goes in a new horrible direction its kind of hard to just say"well fuck it", you want to continue to like them

I love all of Metallica's work save one album. The term is definitely overused.

metallica's music isnt really what makes them sell outs really, its stuff like their own rockband, tv commercials, lars and his fights with file sharing, high ticket prices, etc..

Lol, I'm not going to defend what they do outside the studio and arena, but I love their music and they kick ass live after 25 years. <_>

Just because it's horrible to one person doesn't mean another won't embrace it. I've stayed loyal to many bands through everything they've released. It's what a loyal fan does. Bands "selling out" as yall like to say won't end anytime soon. You can learn to adjust to the new direction or just move on.

"its stuff like their own rockband, tv commercials, lars and his fights with file sharing, high ticket prices, etc.."

Rockband (their one of the most influential bands in history, why wouldn't they have one). File-sharing, so your telling me if your in a band you'd be ok with your music being shared for free? I doubt it. The ticket prices are only high if you can't afford them. I have yet to see an empty seat a Metallica show. So their are about about 20,000 people a night who don't mind it.

I think alot of people are missing the main picture of all of this. THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS A BUSINESS, AND BANDS ARE MARKETING TOOLS TO DRAW "MONEY"!!!!! Saying that bands sell out is so stupid and ignorant it's beyond retarded. Fucking Whaaaaaaaa!!!

I dont really agree, music is very important to me and if i see a band that was once in it for the love of music and now are just looking to be big and get the big paychecks, i cant stay by their side. i know its easy to say but i would always stay true to the music if i were an artist. there are still artists out their with integrity and thats what i respect. i dont buy the crap that its a new direction. they know exactly what their doing when they pussy up there albums. there not going in a new direction, they are pandering like little bitches

Personally I thought Death Magnetic was good and it shows that Metallica is moving back to their roots

whatever call me a purist or non realistic or whatever but music is not a business its a passion. fuck record companies execs, large venue holders, and bands that pander to the crowd. there are still some artists out their that just do it for the love of music. if you gave them a big fancy record contract to sing watered down crap they would say fuck you. thats why i respect alot of the new orleans sludge type bands. their music is holds respect and integrity. For non metal examples look at artists like tom waits, nick cave, leonard cohen etc.. They couldnt give to shits about music as a business, they do it right from the heart. that might sound corny but its what i believe

^true but record companies aren't in it for the music they are in it for the money no matter how much passion the band has for making the music they want to make, record companies still push them to be mainstream to bring in the money

    you have proven my point

like i said fuck record companies, be true to yourself as an artist. ill use an example for instance, my favorite artist tom waits had changed record like four times cuz they wanted to take over his music and make it more accessible. he said fuck that and went to a smaller record company so he could make his own music. true artist stay true to their vision and dont let dollars signs dictate their direction.record companies have absolutely nothing to do with music except try to ruin it
