If you want some more real gory ones, let me know. There's this show Shigurui thats REALLY brutal. You see peoples teeth get stuck in fists and girls get their nipples cut off. Its about samurais. Its really slow paced though, so not a good starting point.

Definitely interested in the gory, "horror" type shows. Although I see what you mean about it being more mystery/suspense than horror.

Wait until you've watched a couple before trying Shigurui. Like is said its very slow paced. But it is good, once you get into the meat of it. Its a lot more realistic and dark than most anime out there.
Shiki is another gory "horror" type. Its a vampire mystery.
Then you have Deadman Wonderland, which is a little less horror and more like fucked up gory. Its good, but read the manga after because the anime kinda cuts off without ending. The manga actually has a conclusion.
