  • Earth is special, its the reason i'm alive. nothing you say will convince me otherwise
You're trapped inside your own reality tunnel. Your life in the grander scheme of the universe is meaningless, as is mine. That's a horrible way to look at the matter.

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law

  • i'll go with the former.... in an instant we'll become extinct and be as forgotten as the Dinosaurs, the neanderthals and whatever preceded them.

The universe isnt privelaged with out existance..... we're privelaged to be in this universe. BUT....we suck and are a cancer to any organic. So we'll die out soon enough
I think we have the potential to make our mark in the universe, but of course that depends on our survival and our continuing to evolve and advance at a geometric rate (like we are now). I feel in a strange sense that if we get out there and explore and find habitable planets with life, we'll have earned the respect of the universe.

i'm well aware that my life and humans are but dust in the wind in the big picture but PERSONALLY i find the earth special because it harbors life. which as far as our current knowledge extends is the only life supporting planet. if another exists thats wonderful, they are special too. But saying the earth is nothing special compared to a scorched ball of rock like mercury for example and the trillions of planets like it is ridiculous.

You're strating to sound a tad bit crazy. Repect of the universe? It's just a place, it can't show respect. If anything, it'd just show the control we have over it.

only thing that has control over the universe is dark energy

Haha, yes, I guess I do. It's just something I feel. I'm not trying to be logical here.

seriously. Nasa recently discovered a galaxy that's so big by the current laws of physics it shouldn't exist

Please don't be the first person to get unnecessarily angry in this discussion.

A few things, one, "as our current knowledge extends" is quite a small limit. Most people use "as far as we know" as a limit that could potentially encompass maybe 30, 40 or maybe even 80 percent of potential knowledge. The "as far as we know" limit that you are setting up for yourself is less than a millionth of a percent.

Also, "if another exists" is a bit concerning as well. It's not just a matter of one, two, ten, fifty or a million more existing. It's trillions and quadrillions. Is it still special if it's one in a quintillion? I don't really think so...

we can't even find one life supporting planet and you think theirs quadrillions of earth like planets out there abundant in life? now i know you're trolling

Do you know the furthest place that a human invention has reached from Earth?

Besides, now I know you aren't reading what I'm saying, the Drake equation outlines all of that.

You've said all you can though. We can't find it. That's because of our limitation as a species, not because they don't exist.

our fuel-based propulsion system wont get us anywhere anytime soon.

BUT.... put air travel in perspective of when it was first started to now; and it has advanced at a ridiculously fast pace. Time will shrink the universe for us

What a great thought. It will shrink our galaxy, for sure. Even if we somehow discover how to travel at warp speeds (light speed squared, cubed, and so on), we'll probably never leave the confines of our galaxy.

We can't even see much further than we can, the reason is because the light from that far hasn't reached us, and won't for a long ass time

i read in maxim (lol) that some scientists were working on theory's for FTL travel that were pretty similar to Mass Effect. IE. decreasing the mass in front of the vehicle effectively raising the speed of light. They said all this revolves around dark energy and would likely be a thousand years before it comes to fruition but its pretty amusing. well to me at least

Shane, since you trust that .gif as a source of information, let's just do some math.

Let's say 1/4 of that ONE galaxy has a planet system. That's 250,000,000,000 stars with at least one planet. Let's make a huge misstep in logic and say that for some reason, each of those stars has one planet. Just one. I'm again willing to make a jump from reality and say that 1/500 planets contains life. Just .002 percent in this galaxy. That's 500,000,000 in this galaxy alone. Is 1/500 too much? Okay, how about 1/50,000? 5,000,000. Okay, maybe that's more acceptable. 5,000,000 in this galaxy that contain some type of life. From your wildest X Files nightmares to an amoeba. What's an acceptable fraction for the ratio of intelligent : non-intelligent? 1/1,000,000? 5, including Earth. Sure, a small number, but that's this one galaxy. How many did that .gif say were in that one blank space filled with nothing? 10,000? So there, 50,000 intelligent life bearing planets in that blank space. Let's, again, making a huge mistake, said that that fraction of the fraction of the sky was 1/10. The numbers just keep on getting bigger from here on out. Remove the "logical missteps" and it will just keep on getting bigger.

Oversimplified? Definitely. However, it illustrates the enormity of the plane we are discussing. It's mindboggling, really.
