Why do people care so much about "the grand scheme of things" so fucking much? The only time we should care about the rest of the universe is if it posses threat to us. Sure, finding other intelligent life, or life at all would be cool, but don't make so much out of it.

Yes, I'm very aware of the Drake equation. I'm not suggesting earth is the only planet harboring life. I am suggesting any planet harboring life is "special." Until humans discover other planets with life, which I'm really hoping happens in my lifetime, the earth will be seen as "special." When that happens, people will realize they're insignificant in the grander scheme of the universe. I will not be one of those people.
I wouldn't be one to make the claim that billions, trillions or quadrillions of planets are "special." I am not confident enough in people to understand that the Earth is one of many many many more than they realize, so I would be willing to bet that Earth will be seen as "special" as long as intelligent life is there to inhabit it. However, I do not believe that is the case. It interests me that you think that the Earth is "special" even though you admit it isn't close to exclusive as a life bearing planet. Why?
EDIT:
What the fuck am I saying? We are insignificant. Intelligent life just seems to be rare from our current, and very limited, perspective. I think we have the capability to move past destruction and live in harmony with the planet (not with ourselves, but with the planet). That's special to me.

Existence is bullshit.
I have some books for you to read, Bro Namath.

Well, I'm one of those people that thinks that the pursuit of total understanding is one of (if not) the most important ideal for humanity. The appeal to finding sentient life is to open the door to a completely different perspective and history, which allows for more understanding.
We should care about the rest of the universe because we are a part of it, in the same way that I care about my country and the same way I care about Earth. It just gets a lot harder once you start thinking about the universe.
This is one of those conflicting subjects for me.
I think we're insignificant in the grander scheme of the universe (which is just my nihilistic and existentialistic side coming out).

I think any planet capable of producing and harboring an evolved organism is special. Especially an intelligent organism. If we discovered a large quantity of these planets, they would all be special to me. Each one would be unique.
There we are!
Was that a hint of optimism in that post?
Yeah, uncharacteristic of me huh. It's strange, because I'm very optimistic towards man's evolution and man's relationship with the earth (gaia), but very cynical and very pessimistic towards man's relationship with man.

I see where you're comming from, but I just find it too hard to care about the universe as much as I care about something like my country or Earth. I definitely find subjects like alien life extremely interesting, and I'd like to hear positive evidence of it in my life time, but I just don't really care about it as much as you or Illuminatus. I'm not a philosophyfag.

Earth is special, its the reason i'm alive. nothing you say will convince me otherwise
The reason you are alive? What makes you think you are special as well?
you must think you're so clever
Take it easy, brochacho, just trying to have a discussion here. I didn't mean that as an insult at all, it's just you made it sound as if your rationale for saying Earth is special is that it is the place you live. What is it in the grande scheme of things where one human lives?
Whatever floats your boats, dudes.
You will agree with me or die.

It hits closer to home, for sure, which is why it's a common train of thought.
P.S. I'll give you some Kant and Russell at Amon Amarth, you will become one of us.

But I think we're special at the same time.
You know?
i'll go with the former.... in an instant we'll become extinct and be as forgotten as the Dinosaurs, the neanderthals and whatever preceded them.
The universe isnt privelaged with out existance..... we're privelaged to be in this universe. BUT....we suck and are a cancer to any organic. So we'll die out soon enough

Ok, I'd be fine with that. My mom's been bitching at me to read something, so might as well. Seriously...
