if the lyrics were the least important part of a song then bob dyaln and neil young would have no career, nevermind be some of the biggest artists of the last 100 years
then why is there so much music (mostly metal..) where you can barely discern the lyrics? i think the ability of the singer is very important to the song, but the lyrics themselves don't mean as much overall..depends on the genre or sub-genre.
but slap, quite getting so butthurt over differing opinions <_>

It's not like all the music I listen to is technical. I listen to Stoner/Doom metal and tons of other genres of music that are easy on the instruments all the time. But the songs are still interesting and have emotion.
not really i listen to tons of stoner doom, i listen to it because its awesome but compared to the all time great artists, its not even remotely close dude

well when an artists virtually changes the entire history of popular music what do you want me to say??
You know something? I give you no credit for saying that Dylan is good because of his influence, which is astronomic. Nirvana changed rock music forever and the ceiling of their influence is yet to be known, but shit I think they sucked. Hard. Robert Johnson or even Bob Dylan also had an immense influence upon music and I consider them both to be great artists. It isn't influence or lyrics that makes music good.

thats why i stayed away from metal for so long... i usually dont like metal songs until i look up the lyrics before, but metal sometimes forces you to feel the emotions, usually to me anger or aggressivess because its so in your face, believe me ive come along way, i never thought i would like metal in 1000 years five years ago

I don't even think it's the artist's "soul" that makes music good either. I think it's all about what I feel when I listen to it. If it makes me feel good then it's good. If it doesn't, then it's bad.

i agree. besides, what does popularity have to do with quality of the music? look at all the modern pop/hip hop crap were stuck with today. its very popular with the mainstream audience but sucks donkey dick compared to real music. Thats not to say i dont like some of the popular stuff like that, i like some dylan songs, but its not a good representation for this argument

Like I just said, it just makes me feel good. It can be the lyrics, it can be the vocals, it can be the chords that make me feel good, but if we're looking for a blanket statement to spread across music, you can't claim one of those as a reason why it's good, because good music exists without those. The only blanket statement you can make is "good music makes me feel good." You can't say "Good lyrics make good music."

Now that's damn false. If that one simple reggae song makes you feel better than anything else, it's the best song ever made.

name some musical artists who are great lyricists that make bad music?? i cant really think of many

and i dont listen to music for just prolific lyrics...the point of music is to lift the great lyrics even higher uing musical abilities..some artists are so talented that they dont need two key changes to get there point across
But the lyrics are still your main priority and that's something that I think is just absolute bullshit. That's why I don't like Rap, it's centered around lyrics.

As I've previously stated, go read a book or some poetry

music to me is not just about feeling good, the great artists have more responsiblity than just making us feel good...just like a great director or script writer has more responsibilty than just making some summer blockbuster that everyone would enjoy

I can name a million rappers who have some incredible lines and lyrics that I don't like. One big one is Tupac, who I just can't get into that much, but he's just a fantastic lyricist. Conversely, I think Pink Floyd have some terrible lyrics but I think they're one of the best bands ever.

the only emotions i ever get from metal is aggressiveness or anger or anything adrenaline related pretty much, ive never felt sorrow, pain, regret, sympathy, or any other type of introspect

i dont listen to much tupac , i just know his hits and they are from from lyrical masterpieces but maybe he is i really dont know him enough. and hence why i dont really like pink floyd, i listen to lyrics for most so if the lyrics are meh theres nothing to lift up
