    Not really, but alright.
When I went to UW, UW was rated #2 in the nation for Computer Science behind Harvey Mudd. They came in first in most CS competitions and with the money that the Gates donated to create a world class Engineering school it is no wonder why their program is so fantastic.

I've worked for 4 Electrical Engineering and Computer Science companies and have been an integral part of the hiring team for all four. Additionally I have worked with two dozen companies and feel I have a fairly good grasp on marketability of this field. I will agree that two dozen companies is probably a small sample size, but I do assert that it is a reasonable basis to draw the conclusions from.

You should know, that I did not go to MIT nor did I even apply. I could not afford out of state tuition. What I have seen though is that "in the real world", people do not care about what accredited engineering school you went to. When people say stuff like "I went to Michigan" others will respond "cool. how about that football squad". Someone says the same thing about MIT and people follow it up with questions about the crazy tech hijinks that happen.

I am under the impression that you are either still in college or have not worked long in the field. If so, you would know what I am talking about.

I thought about applying there but didn't, honestly. I'm not arguing that MIT is the best and has the best reputation, but for a public university in the middle of the state with the shittiest economy, Michigan is up there. And yes, I'm going to be a senior in the fall.

I honestly couldn't stand being at MIT anyway lol. Having that on a resume would be nice, but a degree from here isn't shabby.

And I think you might misunderstand my criticism as being negative towards Michigan. It's not. It is a great school, I am sure. But when you graduate and get out in the real world you will start to notice how little a school's name means in the engineering world. You absolutely have to get the degree from an accredited university, and there is probably only ~100-200 universities that qualify. Is Michigan a great EE school? Yes. Is that name alone going to get you a job? Nope. Only MIT does that (and not always).

MIT is to engineering, what Harvard is for Law. Other then the best of the best, most employers don't care too much about your school name. They only care about 1. your grades 2. the program is accredited by NAAEE 3. you received your BS/MS/PhD.

I don't misunderstand the criticism at all and don't take it personally, I just found it to be an overgeneralization. And I'm not an EE, thank god.

well in that case, nm :) My engineering comments are only related to EE, CS, or Computer Engineering.

I have no clue about ME, CE, or any other engineering field that is not directly tied to electronics.

I had to take a circuits class for my major, but that's as far as I go in EE. I knew immediately after my freshman year that I wouldn't be going into the computer or electrical-intensive engineering majors haha.

you probably just had a bad teacher. this shit is easy! :-D

The circuits class was easy lol, I just don't enjoy that stuff nearly as much as the major I chose.

neat. If you have the opportunity (and you probably wont), you should try and get a job with Blue Origin. I interviewed at Blue Origin last summer and it was literally one of the coolest work places I have ever seen. It was literally a dream job. The reason why I said you probably wont is because they are really really picky about who they let interview and you almost always need a direct reference to get a phone screen.

Crazy little fact - They test rocket engines in Kent WA!!! This is a fairly heavily populate area... and they test them right there in the city! They have this really crazy slightly underground chamber to allow this. It is wicked awesome.

    JLR - read this

    Wow.

Yeah... It is a pet project for Jeff Bezos (Amazon founder). He dumps 50 million into that company every year and doesnt really seem to care if it turns profitable. Their lobby is AMAZING. It is almost like a really rad museum. He reconstructed a three story exact replica of the space ship in Jules Verne "From the Earth To The Moon" with every detail in the book. They have spacesuits, and meteorites, and satellites, and one of the star trek enterprise movie props. (IV after the explosion if I remember correctly). It is just literally one of the coolest places ever!

I submitted my resume three times, without a single word. Then I found out one of my coworkers neighbor worked there, and so I got my resume submitted by the neighbor. Anyways, first I had a phone screen, and then an informal meet and greet because I was local. I then was able to land a full blown interview....

The first 4 hours involved being in a group with a dozen of their most respected technical people. Their "best of the best". The idea of this part was to discuss everything I have done, and everything I know. If I claimed to know some technology and concept then they grilled me to make sure I really knew it and wasnt just making shit up. If you make it past that (which I did), then they move to one-on-one interviews where they dont ask you anything about what you've done or know, but only questions about shit you dont know.

I ended up not receiving an offer because they were looking for someone who could be a expert at real time OS development for 5 months and then transition over into building RAD-hard space electronics. I was told I nailed the electronics part and they couldnt ask for a better fit there, but I am not really a C programmer and didnt have the experience they needed for Real TIme OS programming.
