That looks lit. Bet they’re having an absolute blast and creating life long memories instead of crying about it
Playing music other people made, without needing to do any of the heavy lifting, and riding off the successes of popular established bands, while taking opportunities and resources away from real bands struggling to get their music heard. They can eat cock
Can’t take an opportunity from you if you’re not looking for one
Dude, serious question, have you even looked at the shows our local venues book lately? Look at The Forge or WC Social Club or Beat Kitchen or Sub T, even Reggies - the only local shows they're booking are cover bands. Our venues literally wont book original bands anymore. The only venue that regularly books originals is Liar's Club, and even they have fallen into the trap of booking the same bands over and over again.
I have this conversation at work all the time. There's a really good up and coming metalcore band called How It Ends. People seem to really like them, constantly get compliments when they practice at my work. I asked them if they play out a lot, they told me they cant get booked. I see they played THREE shows all year. Without even being prompted they said "these venues only want to book cover bands".
This isnt me just crying to cry, its a serious issue that has killed the local scene here. Bands cannot get booked, period. People are not coming to their shows, period.
And I get it. Cover bands draw. As you have all said, people dont want to hear music they dont know. People arent going to shows to find new music anymore, they're going to shows to listen to the music they grew up with and get drunk. And it draws, venues want money, and so they keep booking cover bands. I get it, I really do.
Doesnt mean it sucks any less. Doesnt mean its a good thing. Metal is a dying genre as it is. It simply doesnt exist in any local capacity anymore because cover bands killed the local scene.
You ever see a rap cover artist? No, because that would be corny as fuck, and most rap fans will tell you its corny as fuck. Thats why rap is the dominant genre. People actively seek new artists. They prop up new artists. They book new artists. I just wish metal was the same way, because as it is, its devoid of all artistic integrity, and is an incredibly demoralizing waste of time.
I get that I bitch about this more often than I should, considering Im quite serious in that I will never play in a band ever again, so this doesnt really effect me anymore. But it's still frustrating to see as someone who still sees local bands at work every day.
And guess what most of our clients are anyways? Cover bands! Because everybody knows original bands are dead. And they will ALL tell you that.
You are not understanding the 80s “Play local bars til you blow.” bullshit is DEAD. It has been for a minute. Internet runs the entire ballgame now. That’s where you’re supposed to blow. There’s artists getting signed now that have played little to no live shows before.
Also, you named all decently big venues, ie; where people that already have names play, not dive bars. So yea, it’s either gonna be cover bands, or bands that previously built some kind of name elsewhere….like the internet.
Okay give me a rundown on what all you weenies have been doing for the last year?
Tell me...no let me guess
Johnnie has had kids (triplets in fact) Xeno has come out of the closet Metalcoresades cut his hair and got a corporate job Jobe got fired and is now a janitor in a school Episode got shot and killed in a drive by shooting while trying to sell his CD's on the street corner Jay is still the man
This is kind of venues cover bands get to play. Old guitarist's Avenged Sevenfold tribute is playing here. This is one of the major reasons why I will never play again. This shit pisses me off so much. Why would I ever waste my time writing music, recording, promoting, marketing, etc just to play at a shitty dive bar to 3 people, when there are people out there who dont write music, dont need to market, and can profit off the hard work of an already successful band and play to 300, 400, 500 people? I hate this fucking industry. I hate local scenes. I hate the retarded fucking "fans" who made it this way.
Most people don't have the time to explore entry level underground bands for fun especially in person, because most people don't focus the entirety of their mental energy on recreation
I think you might just need to move around a little. The cover band thing isn’t a deal here. I can name like 3 metal bands from Chicago…ever
Pretty much this lmao. Dude acting like Chicago had a scene like NYHC, Orange County, Florida, and Texas but they never have ever. Chicago has never produced any good metal music or bands. Shit I think Illinois biggest band is Disturbed )
We used to have a good local scene, especially during the thrash resurrgence days. Diamond Plate came from Chicago. They rebranded as Misfire now and are doing ok. Molder is also from Chicago, and has been doing pretty good lately in the OSDM scene.
Disturbed, Smashing Pumpkins, Rise Against, November's Doom, Immortal Bird, Soil, Russian Circles, Broken Hope, Pelican, Yakuza, Born Of Osiris, Dead To Fall, Oceano, Mudvayne, VCTMS, Shellac - all from Chicago area
Not to mention industrial basically started in Chicago with bands like Pigface and Ministry leading that
I don’t really think a scene is very important. Mastodon is basically the class of metal bands from Atlanta, but they were outliers from what most people would’ve considered the scene when they showed up. Sevendust and Stuck Mojo had the local buzz at that time. There was an army of those sorts of bands that never went anywhere. Mastodon had more success elsewhere. My friend was a bartender in Athens when they were still unsigned and they drew better crowds out there than in Atlanta. That changed around Leviathan, when they got a lot of international press recognition. Now they basically own the local venues. They have side projects and “secret” shows that sell out in minutes. They single handedly kept a venue called The Star Bar afloat. It announced it was closing right after Covid and they did some shows there to help get through the rough patch. But that sway was mostly built on them hitting the pavement and touring early and often.
>Got rid of the old car yesterday >truck drops transmission today >you couldn’t have done that yesterday when I still had an extra vehicle you piece of shit?
At least it’s still covered under warranty. Another 10k miles and it wouldn’t have been.
The fuel injector cleaner has helped a lot, oil level doesn't look lower than it did when I topped it off about 600 miles ago. I don't know jack shit about engines but my coworker who has a Hyundai with the same engine also said to have the PVC valve checked.
