A 7 year contract for an above average player isn't worth it. Especially when he's making 20+ mil a season. There were probably other, less expensive options we could have went after that off-season but we chose Ellsbury just to take him away from the Sox.
He's already got a contract offer from a Venezuelan winter league team. If he wants to be a sideshow freak in indie ball, it's prolly an open market for him. I think his determined quest to become an athletic hero is tarnishing his legacy heavily. I don't think anyone would've faulted him for bowing out after his year spent in the Jets QB circus. He managed to carve out a pretty interesting 3-4 years that could have stood out on its own. He's been working out with David Aardsma, who says he could play in AA ball next year. He'll be 30. Dudes in AA at 30 aren't likely to make much of a dent in the big leagues. Not unless they develop a knuckleball lol. His weird cult of Christian people that want to believe he's something he's not are the only reason this is much of a story. I've had arguments on fb with redneck Braves fans that want the team to sign him. They're all completely ridiculous in their assertions. I don't know why they think he can make it as a pro baseball player when he hasn't played in more than 10 years when he couldn't make it as a pro in football despite being all-world at it in college.
Who was he supposed to use? Justin Wilson and K-Rod haven't been any better lately. I wish they'd move Alex Wilson and Rondon up into higher roles but whatever, no manager handles that any differently. I don't get why they didn't call up Jimenez and insist on using Mark Lowe and Buck fucking Farmer though.
