+1 More bass. First time I could hear it distinctly was at 3:38 in CDG. I'm on cheap ear buds at work though, and been jamming Tool nonstop for weeks now so I'm currently hard for Justin's very distinct bass tone. The kick drums and bass both seem a bit muffled and lacking clarity to me. Cymbals and snare sound great. Vocals are sometimes spot on, sometimes a bit soft and could be brought up more to keep them in the front of the mix. It's a guitar focused mix for sure lol.
Do you think given the style and my references mixes (At The Gates - Slaughter of the Soul, Killswitch Engage - Alive Or Just Breathing), the bass is too mixed into it?
As I've said before, bass and kick drum are the hardest things for me to mix. I can never seem to get them where I want them. Ape suggested we start going to someone else for our production. Which I'm considering, but idk if I'm emotionally ready to delegate that to someone else, especially since I'm trying to do this professionally. Though, that's not going anywhere so I guess it doesn't matter.
All I can really state is my own personal preference. I like to be able to pick out what each instrument is doing at any given time. The bass and kick drums seem to bleed together and I can't hear the bass as distinctly as the rest. IDK if it's a recording issue or just an issues of his bass tone.
Doing production for others would has got to be way easier than doing it for your own project because your less attached emotionally and have more space between you and the final project. You're not supposed to be your own lawyer or doctor, why should this be different? Letting someone else take the production reins may allow you to enjoy the process more without having to examine everything on the micro level to the point you start to doubt yourself and hating the the whole thing. Might be easier on the band as a whole if your not the one doing it all. It might be freeing.
You can definitely hear a lot of growth as a band since the first ep. Both the band and the mix sound less raw this time.
Yeah really my only issues were with the mix, but even though the mix is rough you can tell and hear that everything else, at least in my opinion is spot on, I really do like your vocals too and I'm not usually a huge fan of that vocal style. Guitar work is strong as fuck and you guys have already grown as if you've had a couple albums in between to shape this. I understand how hard it would be for you to let someone else produce it but at this stage it might be essentiel for the growth of your sound, which is great. Don't let the emotional attachment stop you from progressing because you guys definitely have the ability and talent to get even better.
Fair... I'll probably end up doing the splits we have planned next, just because Id like some more practice, and Id rather not pay a bunch of money for small releases like that when we arent making all that much yet. But for the full length, I'll probably look into other engineers.
I haven't even brought it up to my guitarist or bassist. My bassist already thinks Im a shitty engineer and I don't need to add fuel to that fire just yet. My drummer thinks they're crazy.

What about from a song perspective?
