I dug it. I feel like there's a lot they could do to make their music more interesting, though. A lot of the time the intro to a song would have a sick beat and then it would become bland once the vocals kicked in.

Yeah I gotcha. I caught them in 2012 on the Apocryphon tour and it was dope af. Played To Take the Black and Winter's Wolves, two songs I thought I'd never see from them. Looked at the setlists they've been playing recently and it barely has anything from Gods of the Earth or Age of Winters so I'm not interested.
They're still great live. I don't really get the hate for High Country. It's not like their earlier stuff, but they've been going that way for a while. There are good tunes on it.
