So this is by Matthew Barney. Barney is a former Ivy League football player slash fashion model that expanded into visual arts and film. This preview is from a series of films he did called 'The Cremaster Cycle'. They were told out of sequence, starting with part 4 in 1994. He's now married with children with Bjork, who does music for his recent films. I've personally only been able to watch any of his stuff in pieces. It's like watching the thread by which nightmares are knitted. Weird>Outwardly Scary. Take a look at this sample:

This is from Chris Cunningham. He was an inspiration to tons of subsequent video tricks from the late 90s forward. Notably, his camera techniques and special effects have been used in films such as '300' and the 'Hills Have Eyes' remake. He was a frequent collaborator with Aphex Twin. His career stagnated when he attempted to get into feature films that were continually shelved, including a version of William Gibson's 'Neuromancer'. This is a short he did called 'Rubber Johnny'

I remember when my friend told me "you should really listen to 'feels' by animal collective, I think you'd dig it, the percussion patterns and all," well although it ended up becoming an instant classic with me, I remember staring at the artwork listening to the album for the first time and thinking "I cant even right now." the pure bliss and happiness drenched in anxiety and horror of the cover art brought me to a mental place where I felt so familiar (and overwhelmingly warm) but completely unsafe and unguarded. 




a professor I had in college described this feeling best:

"I remember on the morning of 9/11, I woke up and saw the images on tv of the plane hitting the second tower. the sky was so blue. it was so blue against the explosion... the instant that hundreds of lives ended. the flames. the crystal blue sky. I couldnt even wrap my mind around it. and I cant, to this day."

It's always crazy to me to see stuff that abstract from a time period where it wasn't even remotely socially acceptable. I saw this movie at a film club in the late 90s called 'Flaming Creatures'. It was made in the early 60s, and was banned for 10 years. It took years afterward for them to find all the reels and put it back together. At the time when I saw it, I was one of less than 400 people that had. Only recently does it even have a wiki page. It's not easy to watch. Lots of crazy gay shit. Enter at your own peril
