CNBC: New Hampshire is America’s Best State to Live in for 2012
Scoring 298/350 Quality of Life Points and moving up from last year's 2nd place, NH was evaluated as the best state to live in. As they summarize
Quality of life is solid across the board in the Granite State. The population is among the healthiest, in part because of the quality of the environment. Want a little more civilization? Boston is just over the border, offering New Hampshire residents the benefits of the big city without the hassles. Crime in New Hampshire is among the lowest in the country.

Only reason why there are better places in CA to live. I can't think of a place in America that is as diverse as CA. In my opinion, if California isn't your favorite state, you just haven't experienced it in full.

California
Depends on what you want to do for a living. I basically am restricted to places with a major financial center, but if you're doing pretty much anything else, you can find a job in San Francisco. It's an incredible business center in the West. If I could move back there I'd love to live back in the Marin area.
Massachusetts - We got the beach, mountains, Red Sox, Bruins, Patriots, Celtics, not overly hot summer, beautiful spring and fall, and not overly bad winter

That sounds like Michigan, except for those sports teams.

Since most of us are going to vote along the line of where we come from, this is sort of silly, so aside from California, two other states that I'd call near-best states are Texas and Virginia.
