when i was in school, i was working full time at a porn shop. they stayed open until 2am, so i'd go in for my shifts after school was over. real late at night, nobody would be there so i used the time to study. made $10.50 an hour to start and moved up to $12 by the time i quit. kept me free of student loans.

even though you've made your decision already i say the factory job is the correct one unless you were planning on going into the graphic design/animation/video game industry. if you have no knowledge of it it would take a long time to learn it plus you'd be paying out of pocket for your health insurance. hard to turn down $17 an hour with full benefits when you're trying to finish college.

I would have gone with the school route. And then when you are in school you could have found much better jobs... Stuff like working at a computer center where you literally do no work but they pay you like 10+ an hour for you to sit there and do your homework. But sounds like you already made your decision.

In my last couple years in college I started being TA's for classes. It was a great job because I would teach the Lab lectures which were supplied to me.... and grade homework, tests, etc. This was 15 years ago that did that... but it paid 15 dollars an hour and was super easy.

Job > school especially when you can do both. What he wants to do he wouldn't be in school long so it would be very easy to do both in a decent time frame.

If you say so... i don't know his situation or what he wants to do. I only know what worked well for me. I put myself though college by working part time in computer labs, working part time as a TA, and getting 20,000 dollars in loans (5k per year). My first job upon graduating from college in 2000 had me starting at 64,000 dollars + full benefits + stock + 10k signing bonus. I am not special. There are others here on the same path I did. Marc for example upon graduating will be in the same position I was 13 years ago.

Bottom line is I wouldnt discourage anyone away from college. Especially if they chose a field that will have good financial returns.

It's so easy to get wrapped up in not going to school if you take the job. As long as going to school is a priority, I don't think there's a bad decision.

Colleges don't teach jobs much anymore.
These days it's all about the 4 year degree,... or the business owner

    Think you'd be surprised.

I depends on your degree. I know for fact that degrees in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Computer Science, all teach knowledge and skills that will be 100% applicable on the job. My first job out of college (ASIC design) used 85% of the knowledge I learned in school to do my job. On the job I also learned new skills and knowledge that school didnt have time to teach me... However the knowledge I gained on the job would have not been possible without the knowledge I gained from school. Ie... My career has built on the knowledge gained in school.

Law, Medical, veterinary, are also degrees that I think should be included in the 4 I mentioned above. However I dont have any first hand experience with those degrees to know for sure.

I benefitted from taking all my major core classes with the same dude who used local businesses and organizations on campus to utilize us for semester long projects using hands on methods to marketing as opposed to using texts/tests.

    Exactly!

My first job was at McDonalds, and at one point in time I was offered a management position. I turned down the offer because I didn't need a position that might take priority over my education. The person they hired instead? Still a manager at McDonalds.

I'd take a better paying job than going to school and coming out with as much debt as what a house costs.

20,000 is what my debt was. 20,000 at 1.75%. I Started work out of college at 64,000. I'd much rather be making 64k with 20k in debt then busting my ass for an extra 12k a year and not completing school because the job was more important then school.

but that really all depends on what he wanted to go to school for. If he wanted to be an elementary ed teacher for example, I hope they arent in it for the money.

School's an investment. It's not like its easy to get a high paying job even with a college degree. It's the bet you make that the average 20k more a year you earn is more than your total tuition + debt. For many, that bet is simple, so the decision is easy. Not everyone is so simple, however.

For me it would be the factory job, you have a good income, and benefits. They say money cant buy happines, but nothing makes me happier than paying my bills, and having extra money to do what I want. Especially if you get sick, if you have a low paying job with no benefits (insurance), doctor and hospital bills can be ridiculous.
Yeah, it may take you longer to finish school, but assuming your still young, consider your self lucky. I know peopple in their mid 30's trying to go back to school, raise a family, pay a mortgage etc. Its hell on their personal lives and will take them 3X's as long as others to finish..
The day you need a gun and don't have one, may be your last.

I agree with this. And is also why I was saying it depends on the degree. My degree falls in the "the decision is easy". I knew what the market was like before I started college, and upon graduation I had 6 offers to different companies. I didnt even take the highest paying offer either. I took the one that was going to offer me the best work experience. I still believe I made the correct choice today.

The only regret I have about school is I wish I would have already applied my knowledge to start up my own business. I was talking to this kid I work with (he is like 24ish and in the same graduate school program I am in). Anyways, besides working at my job too, he started up his own technology company doing web design and itunes/google app development. He personally doesnt spend any time working at this job he started up... but what he does is pay college students 25 dollars per hour to do this work he brings in. He charges his clients 75 dollars for the college students time. So whenever a college student is working for him, he is making 50 per hour for doing nothing.
