So because they're not a part of the mainstream means they shouldn't be talked about? Well, then it looks like all we get to talk about is Slipknot and Metallica.
It's fine that you don't like about Rush, but I don't get why you despise them. Only a few people on here really like them (really only myself and Jay). I don't think they've really changed status all that much. They're still playing the same venues on their current tours that they were playing at 10 years ago, when you say they weren't slightly relevant. They really haven't gone up in popularity all that much. More people may know their name and maybe two songs by them now because of a movie that briefly featured them, but it's not like that's what resparked their career and that's why the decided to write Clockwork Angels.
Well I think it's Rush because unlike Lynryd Skynyrd or Thin Lizzy, Rush is the same band they were 30+ years ago and they've been putting out music consistently through out their career. People have posted tour dates before for LS and some other classic rock bands, but since they're not really doing anything new and since they're aren't really LS or TL, people don't care as much. But Rush has been Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart since 1975 and have been doing new things ever since.
"Progressive Metal/Rock, just as the name says, “Progressive means moving forward,” is always on the cutting edge of new and innovative. It’s just the best stuff out when looking for something “new” and how about……”Progressive.” This is not Rush. There never was nor will there ever be anything progressive about Rush. I find people who are into Progressive Metal/Rock, feel they need to include these hacks in their Prog Metal list of fav’s. There is only one good thing about this dumb fuckin’ band….that is the drummer, Neil Peart. He needs to be playing with real musicians. But, that doesn’t mean I think Peart is that good of a drummer either. Just better at what he does than the other two jack-offs. And, when it comes to a small handful of the worst singers ever, that fuckin’ toucan Geddy Lee pops right up (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:PortraitOfAToucan.jpg
Geddy Lee’s whiny, nasally, complaining vocals, sound so much like Alice Kramden of The Honeymooners, in rare form goin’ off on Ralph. When I hear Geddy start up with his shit, I imagine seeing a large skillet flying, like an ICBM through the air to kiss his scarecrow face, exactly like a cartoon. And then see the metal of the pan mold around and take shape of his huge beak. Oh…if only that could stop his noise. Geddy’s bass playing is almost as useless as Alex Lifeless’ guitar playing. Geddy’s bass playing is just so weak with nothing to add. The guy just can’t play anything creative at all. Geddy works his bass like it’s a wrench on a nut. Alex Lifeson must be the most pathetic excuse for a guitar player right alongside The Firm of U2 (believe me, I’ll get to those useless-worthless U2 fuckers). Rush may be in 2nd place for being the most overrated band to have success in the world.
Really, what does Lifeson need with a guitar anyway? Lifeson handles a guitar just like an actor does in a movie and you know that actor has never picked up one before in his life. I’ve seen children operate an inflatable ballon guitar with more dexterity than Lifeson. Watching Alex Lifeson try to work a guitar, is like watching a 95 year old with advanced arthritis use a Rubik’s Cube.
Then there’s the music of Mush…er..ahh..Rush. Songs with no ending in sight. And these lackluster songs just go on and on and on. Maybe if Rush had a real guitar player and a real bass player, then you’d have something. But, if you did that, then you’d have a real band anyway, wouldn’t cha’? So, in closing, if you’re into Prog Metal that’s great, good for you for having some taste. But, if you like these guys Rush, they don’t belong in the same catagory as real players.
Rush :X Love them or hate them, they are one of the most consistent bands of all-time. That they can still put out quality music like Clockwork Angels is a testament to their skill.
lets ask the people on here how many songs they can name from rush from anything off their new albums except for the big rush fans on here like slap and jay, no one could come up with dick.. i know i couldnt
basically if your a rush fan fine, like your nerd music i dont care all im saying is im just sick of there second wind of fame and just want them to go back to an oldies band that isnt talked about anymore like bachman turner overdrive or grand funk railroad
oh really now, are you suggesting that Rush is liked by their fans? well you dont say.. 8-} And BTO /GFR fucking suck by comparison, there are plenty better classic rock bands you could have made an argument with..
I used to despise Rush. I grew up on them. My dad saw them when they began to peak with Scorpions and UFO. I learned to like them and appreciate them over time. Rush are one of those examples where, in a way, they played a part in pioneering something and happened to be the band that made it bigger than the rest of the bunch. Take Slayer for example. Their way of thrash was a tad different from Metallica, Megadeth, Exodus and so on from the early Bay Area days. Yet, they are "The" band to mention when it comes to thrash (spare Metallica, but c'mon, who the fuck doesn't know Slayer). Rush is in the same boat to me. They took what we consider classic rock but took it to a new level in terms of time signatures and styles of writing. Now take Triumph for example... Another Canadian trio. Played music very similar to Rush. For as much difference as there was, there wasn't. My opinion is they have several songs that are on par, if not better than Rush. Rush though achieved the big time status. Dig deep... there are many bands who are just like Rush, maybe even do it just as well in terms of Prog Rock.. but in the end, they happened to be "The" band. It then showed in their popularity, album sales, fans, etc.
Also.. why the resurgence? My thoughts are as follows:
Sure recent Rush isn't as good as their prime era.. but we live in an age where anything music is easily accessible and it is almost a trend to like big bands from the past. Rush is no different a category than Maiden (see all those people with the shirts at the malls and shows you wouldn't be caught dead at?), Sabbath, Priest and you name it in terms of big bands. Rush has always been popular and still remains popular. No denial here.

You sir get 5 internets for that name drop. 0 fucks if no one else here likes them.
I have an aunt who was kind enough to give me some rare test pressing and promo copies of their albums. She worked at a record store throughout the 70s and 80s so she has a ridiculously rare collection.
I think Nola is wrong he is just talking to the wrong age group when he mentioned people in school.
Most of the people I work with are into country but if I wall around the shop and ask how they feel about rush or if they even know them the people will have an opinion on them and not only know them but have seen them live. So if you're speaking to an age group a little older than myself they will most likely know of rush een without having seen the movie or talked with jay
You tryin to be a hero fool? You wanna see badass mother fucker?! I'll show ya a badass!!!
