Couple of things - First a joke- Owning a dog in the city is like saying “My need for companionship outweighs my distaste for picking up shit. I don't like shit, but I am lonely.”

Secondly since you have owned dogs before- consider the positives and negatives of the breeds. Take huskies for example- Great dogs, tons of fur hair which is going to shed around your place and require more washing if you dont want a stinky dog. Labs - Good but hyper as fuck and will eat everything.

My opinion is that if you want a large dog there are really only two-ish breeds to consider. Boxer and Rottweiler. Neither have lots of hair so wont have a lot of shedding or washing. Both have great and loyal personalities. Both can be trained by those that know how. Really you cant go wrong with either. If I were you, I'd go with a Rottweiler.

What about a Doberman. I've heard amazing things about those dogs.

pits... they are extremely loyal, short coats, and for some dumb reason most people are scared of them so your place is basically safe.... what you really need to think about is what amount of time do you have for your dog, what type of place do you live in--- how much of a yard do you have and are you willing to go out and be active with your dog. there are so many great breeds out there but you really need to research what type of lifestyle and time you have to give to a pet and then make your determination on which one's personality/traits fit those restraints... example --- pits are great temperment and loyal when trained (like most dogs) they are great for apartment living because they don't need a large area all the time and can be happy in a small place but you need to have the time to exercise them because they need to run off their energy and have their bonding time.

I like pits and I think they are awesome dogs but I would never get one because of how many restrictions places have on them. No apartment complex worth living in will let you have them on top of not being allowed at almost all parks at least around me. I know it sucks and shouldn't be that way but I would rather have a breed with no limitations put on it

its crzy the types of dogs that are "black listed" around here. this is from one of the property managers here in killeen..... If Pets are allowed on a property, there is a fee per pet. Pets that we ABSOLUTELY do NOT accept are as follows: Pit Bull, Rottweiler, German Shepherd, Husky, Malamute, Doberman Pinscher, Chow Chow, Great Dane, Saint Bernard, Akitas, Presa Canarios, Wolf hybrids-or any vicious animal.
we have one decent apartment complex that accepts animals according to the animals demeanor not the breed

It's funny the word vicious is in there. I would make a case for my dog saying my dog is not vicious thus should be allowed. I think the word that should be used in the way they used it is powerful. Small dogs generally tend to be more vicious because of the "little man" syndrom but because their bite isn't as powerful they don't get a bad rep.

yeah Doberman's are also nice... I personally would prefer a Rottweiler. I think a Rottweiler vs. a Doberman is like a Mace vs. Fencing sword. That mace is going to fuck your face up yo.

This would be my dream dog, a Saarloos Wolfhound. Part German Shepard, part Timber wolf. It's fucking beautiful. But they're only sold in Europe. :-<
    oh my god, its beautiful!!!

german shepards are good dogs but their back legs always go bad, it's a genetic thing. adopting is a good, you could always go there and see if any dogs catch your eye. you should really just research a dog that suits your needs or get another boxer.
the only breed of dog i dont like are German Shepards. i got attacked by one when i was like 10 it bit me in the face but it was going for my throat. i also had a huge bruise on my hip for like 8 months where it jumped up to get at my throat. the big problem was that it use to be a guard dog at a gas station then when it closed the family took it home as a pet.

Haha I'm still thinking about it man, but yeah from everyone that I've talked to they all have amazing things to say about Dobermans. I'm not making it final yet. I pretty much have a top 5 going on in my head right now.

what other breeds are in your top5?

The only think I dont like about Dobermans is how skinny and serious they are. My neighbor had a doberman and I dont think I ever saw the dog get supper excited they were home. But yeah... very loyal, for sure would protect the home.

My boxer gets so excited when I come home it's like im walking though the door with a giant turkey leg for her.

That's what I loved about Roxy. She was the happiest, energetic, and sweetest thing I've ever had. But yeah a Dobey will make an amazing guard dog, and they'll listen to you very well. My top 5 in no order are

    1.) Boxer
    2.) Pitbull
    3.) Doberman Pincher
    4.) Mastiff
    5.) Rhodesian Ridge back
