i put deftones in the same box as tool, faith no more, system of a down and rage against the machine: kinda metal-ish, but more alt-rock. nu-metal is a pretty unfair label afaic, mostly because it's a title of derision. they've never sunk to the wrestling metal lows of most of those shit bands. there's so much more going on with deftones music than just suburban angst. they've got a heavy trip hop bent to a lot of their later stuff. my girlfriend was talking about them recently and said "what i like about deftones is that they're heavy, but they never let that get in the way of being really pretty". i think that kinda sums them up for those that are curious about them.
I like deftones, but sometimes the music is just too sleepy
I kinda like that about them....They have traces of The Cure and Depeche Mode in them.... Some of these whippersnappers 'round these parts don't understand or appreciate that....
