The wife and I are thinking about flying out to California for a week. We were thinking either San Diego or LA maybe both and split the time. Which is better? What times of year are the best? And do you have any other suggestions on places to visit. Neither of us have been to california.

last time i went out there, we started in vegas, then rented a car to head to l.a. the next day, we went to san diego for a day, then came back to malibu. point is: there's a lot to do in a relatively small area. i've been told that phoenix isn't too far from the rest, as well.

personally, i think l.a. is really cheesy. we were in the silverlake area, which is mostly hispanic. it was a culture shock to go into a dunkin' donuts and have none of the staff speak english. vegas is only fun if you gamble ( i don't) or like to drink in random places without hassle (i do). san diego is pretty, but also pretty boring.
