There were so many bands in the 90's that were heavier than Pantera.
Pantera single handedly owned a decade of metal, they bring so many different styles and genres to the mix, if we're just talking straightup metal, no subgenres, pantera is definatelty top 5.
While I do love Pantera more than Megadeth, and they are one of my favorite bands, the whole keeping metal alive thing is bullshit. There were plenty of 90s bands releasing good heavy music during that time. To say otherwise is a slap to the face to every metal musician who was putting in work at that time.

That doesnt mean they saved metal. There were great records put out in almost every subgenre. Thrash saw the last few good albums before its "death" in the 90s. Death metal got up and running. So what metal didnt get played on mtv or top the billboard or sell out arenas. Its not supposed to.
I agree with this... Mustaine is the better guitar player, not by much, but is better, but Pantera is by far the better band. More chemistry. Mustaine can definatley tear the solos, but I think dime wrote awesome groovy stylw riffs. We should be comparing pantera to better bands than megadeth, seriously. Megadeth is just a great guitar player, pantera is a awesome machine of a band. Groove metal FTW!!!
