*heavy* is a key word to me when it comes to metal. i prefer people who sound like they're pissed off or depressed. it's truer to the atmosphere
I feel like there are a ton of aesthetic possibilities within metal, with some of them being aggression, depression, etc. I think singers like Dickinson, Halford and King Diamond all just fulfill a different aesthetic.
If what Satan described were the only version of metal out there, the genre would get incredibly stale after a while....
not really. it's just trendy to be into 80's shit right now. you guys see it through that prism. fine by me, i just don't like it. i listen to lots of metal that sounds nothing alike. i just choose to subtract that one little stream. same goes for glam-metal, nu-metal and rap-metal. i don't think anyone will lecture me on the value of those. besides, i listen to all kinds of shit. it's not important for metal to be really diverse to me. if i wanna listen to something for it's inherit aesthetic beauty, i'll pop in some classical or something. not faggy king diamond.
You're too hung up on the vocals to pay attention to anything else going on in the music, which is unfortunate. The vocals are but one instrument in the band.
So listening to Slayer, Metallica, Antrhax, Megadeth, Exodus, Testament, Death, Celtic Frost, Anacrusis, Voivod, etc, is trendy?
oh, definitely. people act like you're a dumbass if you *don't* like those bands right now. i happen to love most of those, but that's just more my style.

i don't like keyboards in metal either, for the most part. i still get by
Well it's not like I'm listening to bands like those, and Maiden, King Diamond, Rush, etc because I'll be belittled if I don't. I listen to them because they're fucking kick ass. Besides, I listen to more "new" music than I do "old".

Even without keyboards, King and Andy LaRouque have written some of the best riffs ever. Same goes with all those other bands you think are "gay"
