i'm taking a wild guess here but i would say that Mayhem costs at least 20 million to run each year, before they pay the bands

I'd say that's spot on. The vast majority of that is paid by the sponsors. They get to write it off as advertising. But it can take years to build a relationship with the sponsors too.

I would suggest working for some of these shows for a while way before coming up with your own.
