okay alec is right about the civil war being over states rights. the southern states felt that they could keep slaves if they wanted to because something like that should be up to the states to decide. but northern aggression my ass, the north was progressing and the stupid dumbfuck south wanted to keep slaves doing all there dirty work for them. the north had outlawed slavery for a considerable amount of time prior to the times of the civil war because people started to see that it was wrong to do. if you knew something was as wrong as slavery you would want your entire country to follow something lie that. the whole north picking on the poor 'dont tread on me' south is complete bullshit. Lincoln in fact was trying hard to NOT punish the south as well in fact. alec's point of view is coming off as a warped south person. lincoln wanted to put the bullshit behind and try and move forward. i would like to see actual proof that lincoln was punishing the south cuz its just simply not true
It is true. Ever heard of reparations? Lincoln started that practice. Slavery was legal in ALL of the US, including the North, until the Emancipation Proclaimation was signed into law and became a Constitutional Ammendment. Do your homework, Nola. It was Northern Agression as they fired the first shot at Fort Sumter in SC. I was force fed Civil War history growing up. My father wrote for 13 different universities and at least one magazine on the subject and was considered to be one of the nation's foremost authorities on certain aspects of the war, such as England's support of the South by way of funds, supplies, food, ships, etc.
Alec, the south decided it wasnt going to be apart of the united states anymore because they wanted to keep slaves. dont you think that started it? Lincoln did not want to wage war at sumter, but he also didnt want the country to split in half. so when we signed the declaration of independence dont you think that started the revolutionary war? the same could sort of apply to this situation. the south pretty much declared independence and we were not just going to let them do that.
What it still comes down is the south claimed states rights so they could continue to keep slavery going. slavery was NOT being practiced in the North before the emancipation proclimation regardless of whether it was officially outlawed or not. the north was progressing there civil rights stance and the south did not want to so they were going to actually become there own country so they could keep people as there personal slaves. ya big bad northern bullies

This statement is soooooo not correct. I certainly hope this isn't what they are teaching kids today. I'll address each incorrect thing: 1. The southern states that ceceded did so because they felt they were not being adequately represented in our government. Had as much to do with the taxation of certain goods that were primarily coming to and from the south. Slavery was an issue but at the time not as big an issue as you'd think. 2. The simple act of cecession did not start any war. The act of lobbing a twenty pound mortar at Fort Sumter actually started the fighting, a pre-requesite for war. 3. If Lincoln did not want to wage war then why did HE order the attack on Fort Sumter? 4. Even in the antebellum years of this country war is an economic boom for certain manufactured products such as munitions and hardware. The majority of those manufacturers were located in the North. You do the math. 5. The signing of the declaration of independence didn't do as much to start the Revolutionary War as shooting at the British and expelling them from our country did. 6. Slavery was indeed being practiced throughout the country, even in the North, where slaves were still caught and returned to their owners when they escaped. 7. The people that landed in this country hundreds of years before the war had slaves. They landed in the northern part of the country.
Please do yourself a favor and read a book. You can't possibly know, nor can I, what a person was thinking 150 years ago unless they wrote it down and you read it. I'm not going to continue to attempt to correct you. You think what you will and I'll go with what the historians relay to me as fact.

Alec, without slavery the entire South economic structure would be in severe jeopardy. I believe that is more of a reason to secede than tax issues. The south productional activity was built around slavery and so was most economic issues of the time, including taxation... I have read primary source material on this subject frequently because i was a history major in school that focused on American History. There were other issues for seceding but after many many articles i can only conclude it was primarily due to the issue of slavery. they may have tried to hide that fact as much as they could but its still the underlining concern.
2. The simple act of cecession did not start any war. The act of lobbing a twenty pound mortar at Fort Sumter actually started the fighting, a pre-requesite for war.
This to may is opinion. i say that removing half the country and saying that are now going to be there own country could infact be a start to a war. there are causes to a war and then there they actual start of combat, they can be seperate terms..
3. If Lincoln did not want to wage war then why did HE order the attack on Fort Sumter?
simply stated because he felt that he had too. he had to do what he thought was best for the country and imo felt war was prob to be inevitable
4. Even in the antebellum years of this country war is an economic boom for certain manufactured products such as munitions and hardware. The majority of those manufacturers were located in the North. You do the math.
if theyre teaching southern kids that the civil war happened so that lincoln could see an economic boom in the north that was already lightyears ahed of the south then im concerned for our children as well....
5. The signing of the declaration of independence didn't do as much to start the Revolutionary War as shooting at the British and expelling them from our country did.
arguable, most wars are started on paper since forever. to say the war didnt start till actual shots are fired i think is dismissive to the point
6. Slavery was indeed being practiced throughout the country, even in the North, where slaves were still caught and returned to their owners when they escaped.
The north sent slaves back to the south only as an attempt to coexist with the south. it was a compromise nonetheless. actual slavery was not a normal practice of any northern states immediately proir to the war. sending slaves back to the south doesnt count as conducting slavery
7. The people that landed in this country hundreds of years before the war had slaves. They landed in the northern part of the country.
