Lincoln'smain goal in office was to preserve the union of america. Slavery was not his main issue and only announced the emancipation proclamation as a stategy. Was he a great president? yes but MLK fought daily for the specific cause of civil rights so i dont see how you could make that claim
and why did Booth assassinate Lincoln? Oh yeah because he freed the slaves and started to move forward to give voting rights to blacks. His assassination stopped that
why the man killed him is irrelevant. Lincoln did do things to improve and progress civil rights, i just think imo that MLK did at least just as much and probably more. after lincoln was assassinated blacks did not really move much forward until MLK came along. once MLK died we saw significant changes to civil rights and a pretty quick pace. i think that was due to King's specific goal of civil rights. not much happened after lincoln died because his ultimate goal didnt really have anything to do with slaves, he was just relieved that the country he ran wasnt going to split in half. like i said both important, but i think mlk at the very least deserves his day and is one of the most significant figures in american history
Lincoln was completely willing to stop where he stopped, I used to be his biggest fan until I actually read the Lincoln-Douglas debates, that is where that shell of a man showed his true colors.
Nola is right in this. The Civil War was started completely because of jobs. Think of it this way, there was not one white guy in the North leaving his family behind and risking his life to free the slaves. The issue was, Lincoln didn't want slavery coming into the North, that would obviously take away jobs. Lincoln didn't really care about freeing slaves, he just didn't want slavery in the North.

The War of Northern Agression was started over states' rights and not jobs. During the 1860's there wasn't unemployment or welfare so they didn't care who was working and who wasn't. Back then you worked if you wanted to survive. Lincoln was assassinated over his treatment of the recently defeated southern states. He set out to punish those states for actually daring to cecede from the US. Booth just offered him another point of view. Oh, slavery was already in the Northern states. Got there before it got to many areas of the south. A couple hundred years earlier in fact.
okay alec is right about the civil war being over states rights. the southern states felt that they could keep slaves if they wanted to because something like that should be up to the states to decide. but northern aggression my ass, the north was progressing and the stupid dumbfuck south wanted to keep slaves doing all there dirty work for them. the north had outlawed slavery for a considerable amount of time prior to the times of the civil war because people started to see that it was wrong to do. if you knew something was as wrong as slavery you would want your entire country to follow something lie that. the whole north picking on the poor 'dont tread on me' south is complete bullshit. Lincoln in fact was trying hard to NOT punish the south as well in fact. alec's point of view is coming off as a warped south person. lincoln wanted to put the bullshit behind and try and move forward. i would like to see actual proof that lincoln was punishing the south cuz its just simply not true
