When Metallica started, they pretty much looked at all the bands around them and copied them the best they could. This resulted in some unoriginal music on Kill 'em All, but some great original music. When Hammet came along, they lost the act and made some ingenious albums (Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, AJFA) . By the time The Black Album came along, they started to copy the changing music scene again. They've been doing this ever since.
