Packers free agents are looking for the financial rewards that come from winning the Super Bowl. Most of them are confident in their ability to earn big contracts somewhere and are looking to be included among the group of players who have had their contracts extended during the season. "I understand it's a business," said Cullen Jenkins, whose agents had some talks with the Packers during the season but never got close to a deal. "Hopefully, there's not a lockout and even if there is not, we can get something done. Hopefully, we can get it ironed out quickly." But Jenkins also touched on the reality that if nothing has been done by now, there's a good chance it won't be done at all and he'll be on the free-agent market. Jenkins said he's prepared to have to hit the market and see what's out there.
Palmer puts house up for sale
Carson Palmer may be taking another step toward extracting himself from Cincinnati -- the area, anyway. It seems as if the change in offensive coordinators has not lessened quarterback Carson Palmer's resolve to leave the Bengals. A representative at Comey & Shepherd Realtors Wednesday confirmed that Palmer's five-bedroom house in Indian Hill is being prepared to be put on the market. The listing is scheduled to go up early next month. Reports have indicated that Palmer would retire if he isn't traded, but Palmer has not done an interview since the Bengals lost their final game of the season, at Baltimore on Jan. 2. His Bengals contract runs through 2014.
Jackson expects Bolts' franchise tag
While the mere concept of a franchise tag remains somewhat murky, Vincent Jackson is wearing a bull's-eye in San Diego. The team's personnel people have been meeting this week to decide the makeup of the team in 2011. However, it has been known for two months that general manager A.J. Smith has been leaning toward keeping Jackson another year. Jackson, according to someone familiar with the player's thinking, expects the tag and plans to play for the more than $10 million it would guarantee him. That is, if the franchise tag is part of a new CBA.
With an awful 2010 behind the Panthers, might they be turning to a future that doesn't include Steve Smith? Smith, who'll turn 32 this summer, discussed the possibility of being traded with team owner Jerry Richardson this past season, according to two league sources. ... While general manager Marty Hurney wouldn't discuss any private conversations the Panthers have had with Smith or his agent, he did acknowledge the team's star receiver is extremely frustrated. "I think Steve is probably not unlike everybody in the building ... he was not happy with 2-14," Hurney said.
