Former New England Patriots running back Laurence Maroney was taken into custody by St. Louis police late Monday night.
Police would say only that five people in a late-model Infiniti were arrested Monday night, and are accused of possessing marijuana and weapons. Police declined to name the suspects.
Maroney’s publicist, Jane Higgins, confirmed the arrest Tuesday.
According to KMOV News 4 in St. Louis, the 25-year-old Maroney was held on unlawful weapons charges and drug charges.
The St. Louis police reportedly told TMZ that while Maroney has a valid "Conceal and Carry" permit, he was arrested for packing the gun while under the influence of drugs. According to the TMZ report, Maroney was in a car with five other people when police say they observed "several occupants" of the vehicle smoking what was believed to be marijuana.
According to KUSA Ch. 9 news in Denver, Higgins says the 25-year-old former Patriot was on his way to a concert in his hometown when he was pulled over by a police officer. She says an officer was investigating a crime involving another car.
Higgins says Maroney told the officer he did not know anything about the other vehicle. The officer asked to search Maroney's car and found a gun. Maroney was taken into custody.
Higgins says Maroney told the officer about the gun before the search and says the running back has a license for the weapon and he was released without charges according to the KUSA report. Higgins denies Maroney is accused of possessing drugs.
Formal charges have not been filed. A Broncos spokesman says the team is aware of the arrest but declined further comment.
Maroney was drafted 21st overall by the Patriots out of Minnesota in 2006. He rushed for a career-best 835 yards in 2007. He was traded to the Broncos in September after he was inactive for the 2010 season opener. Maroney rushed for only 74 yards in four games with the Broncos this season, averaging just 2.1 yards per carry.

Mike Singletary told ESPN 1000 on Tuesday that he is joining the Minnesota Vikings staff, where he will be reunited with former Chicago Bears teammate Leslie Frazier.
"I will be in Minnesota with Les," Singletary told "The Waddle & Silvy Show." "I will be a linebackers coach/assistant head coach."
Also, talks between Josh McDaniels and the Rams to hire him as offensive coordinator have hit a snag and they may be looking elsewhere.
If the reports that came out last weekend are correct, we may not be done with the whole "illegal special teams wall" thing. We of course know that New York Jets strength and conditioning coach Sal Alosi was caught tripping Miami Dolphins special teams gunner Nolan Carroll(notes) -- with malice aforethought -- during the 2010 season.
Now, it appears that the New England Patriots may have done the same thing ... which is exactly what Jets special teams coach Mike Westhoff said was happening after the NFL fined the Jets $100,000 for Alosi's actions. As FOX Sports' Jay Glazer reported over the weekend, one Patriots player can be seen on video, trying to trip a Jets gunner, during the New York-New England Week 2 game:
Glazer also said that the Jets found this out when they signed an (unnamed) ex-Pats player to their practice squad, and that player told the Jets' coaching staff that "when we were with the Patriots, we did the exact same thing, and almost got you guys."
Come on J. What do you expect mayne? Everything he said in that interview was 100% true and the Jets shut everyone the fuck up(Ed). No one believed and while they had one of the best defenses the Pats D was talked about being more better then the Jets. Let the man celebrate and bask in the glory because that was a big win.
Saw that this morning. Flew right by her lol. She's actually defending him about it since everyone is giving him shit about it. She said he already has signed like 30 things for her and has hung out with her...still fucked up tho lol.
