From where they were and the way the rule is laid out they should have gone for it because at the very least it would have gone out the back of the end zone. He would have got to kick it with the D stand back if I read that right

No stand, but the defense has to line up 5 or 10 yards off the ball so the kicker can get a long running start like they do on kickoffs since there is no chance of a block
