How many bands can't even make it through their second albums without running out of gas?
plenty, but i see what you're saying. I'll never down talk what mastodon has done before this record, but seeing as how the hunter was iffy and then they released this, I'm just not seeing anything worthwhile coming from them anymore. Maybe "sell-out" was harsh, but they're making money. Mastodon is their job now, that's not what it was when they started out.
I don't hate the content as much as I hate that this decline in quality and increase in mainstream appeal means my time with Mastodon is pretty much up. I have no interest any more
You're not even going to wait for their next album before deciding to burn that bridge or not? I mean, yeah Once More Round the Sun wasn't anything close to great Mastodon materiel, but maybe this is just a bump in the road. I have confidence they'll be back on their shit next album.
OMRTS was the next album. While I liked The Hunter more, I saw it as the beginning of their more hard rock/radio sound, and OMRTS kinda solidified it. They're one of my all time favorites, so I'll probably end up checking out everything they put out, but I'm not gonna count on liking it. I'd love to be proven wrong though.
Yeah I can agree with you. Although, in my opinion, even though they slowed down and kind of condensed their sound to fit a different standard for The Hunter, I still enjoyed it. It was good Mastodon, just no what I was expecting. Tbh, Once More Round the Sun is pretty meh for me. A couple songs I listen to often, but overall boring. However, I still have confidence in the band that gave us Leviathan and Blood Mountain.
As far as the video, I don't get what they were shooting for. Nothing about it really seemed satyrical or funny. At first it seems like a regular Mastodon video and then there's girls shaking their ass. I'm not gonna say it's stupid, but it seems like they're just boarding a hype train. Mastodon are sell-outs

Slap, I can see where you're coming from though. I can't give you a band that we share mutual liking for that I can use because I can't think of one, but for example's sake I'm using Fozzy. I have loved all their original albums. All That Remains, Grail, and Sin and Bones to me where fucking solid. I loved the vibe they captured and it reminded me of some old school classic metal mixed with a hard edge kick. They never really picked up with the mainstream or were a big name or anything but I really liked their shit. Anyway, come Sin and Bones. One of my favorite albums in general. First questionable move, they had M. Shadows on a song. It threw me the fuck off but the rest of the album was so solid. Then come two months ago, they released Do You Wanna Start a War? and I was devastated. They threw away their sound for more easily accessible rock radio bullshit. Simple song schemes, inside-the-box lyrics, no creative instrumentals and no song topping like 4 mins. And suddenly all the critics jizzed over it and all these new fans were flocking out of no where. And p.s. the album was horrible. But they meant so much to me, even though the current album was a flop, I can't throw them away yet. That's how I feel about Mastodon and OMRTS (except OMRTS>DYWSW).

Necrothulhu said: How tho? Is the fact that a metal band is putting twerking in their video alone make it satyrical or something?
Still hate the Black album 2 decades later.
