I don't like either band but it annoys me that a superb drummer like Portnoy would join Avenged. I understand people need to take breaks but this would be like Steve Harris leaving Maiden to play in Killswitch Engage.

Portnoy is NOT a permanent member of that shitty band A7X. Nowhere in his statement does he say anything other than he's been in need of a break for a while and his bandmates in DT didn't feel the need for a break. People need to learn to read.
I don't get the hype on MSG. It's just an arena that just happens to be in New York. People have just hyped it up so damn much over the years. I just don't care about it <_>

This. I either expect an official statement from A7X in the next few weeks announcing him as their official Drummer, or they'll just continue touring with him and not say anything.
Lol there is a lot of butthurt in this thread. Dude wanted to take a break after 25 years the band wanted to continue so he quit so they can move on. Nothing wrong with wanting a break to do some new stuff. So in summation, quit yer bitchin'!

people need to stop reading so much into his statement and assuming just because hes quitting hes joining avenged permanently. all he said was he has been working 25 years straight without a real break and he wanted one. he doesnt want to be responsible for everything for awhile. do i wish he would join avenged? yes but i wont be surprised if he doesnt...he would add a lot of talent and musicianship and songwriting to the band

Show me where he says he has joined A7X......it says other projects. Plural. Meaning more than one.
He's going to join A7X. Just accept it and move on.
No coincidence that he happens to quit DT when he started playing with A7X. It's obvious he was having hell of a lot more fun playing with Avenged cause he had so much free will to do what he wanted instead of sticking to one thing and never having a break. Years down the road he will go back to DT and they will accept him with open arms. For now just accept he will be with Avenged.
I see him taking a year long break like he said he was gonna do and then to work on one or more of his side projects just like he said he was gonna do.
